What is domestication?

Michael D. Purugganan

Summary: The nature of domestication is a coevolutionary process that arises from a specialized mutualism, in which one species controls the fitness of another to gain resources and/or services. The current definitions of domestication are anthropocentric and overlook the role of unconscious selection, calling for a more inclusive definition that encompasses non-human domesticators and other forms of domestication.

Picking sides: feeding on the abaxial leaf surface is costly for caterpillars

Sakshi Watts et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that caterpillars prefer feeding on the abaxial leaf surface despite higher trichome density, resulting in longer feeding times and growth delays. Lab experiments show that feeding on the abaxial surface with more trichomes affects caterpillar growth, leading to tradeoffs in performance, exposure to predation, and abiotic stressors.

Intentional and unintentional selection during plant domestication: herbivore damage, plant defensive traits and nutritional quality of fruit and seed crops

Anahi R. Fernandez et al.

Summary: The study found that crops are more susceptible to herbivore attacks compared to their wild relatives, mainly due to lower levels of herbivore defensive traits, especially indirect defenses. Additionally, the nutritional quality of crops was lower than that of wild relatives, potentially leading to increased biomass loss to herbivores as they increase consumption to meet their nutritional requirements. This research provides important insights into how changes in defensive and nutritional traits following domestication could impact crop susceptibility to herbivore attacks.

Domestication of Chili Pepper Has Altered Fruit Traits Affecting the Oviposition and Feeding Behavior of the Pepper Weevil

Yosra Chabaane et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of pepper weevils on wild and ornamental peppers, finding that fruits and flowers from these plants were less susceptible to attacks compared to varieties selected for consumption. This has important implications for chili pepper breeders and could aid in the selection of resistant varieties against this pest.

Squash Varieties Domesticated for Different Purposes Differ in Chemical and Physical Defense Against Leaf and Root Herbivores

Charlyne Jaccard et al.

Summary: This study examined the differences in defense traits and interactions with herbivores among varieties of squash domesticated for different purposes. Results showed variation in cucurbitacin content and trichome density among varieties, with no clear pattern based on domestication purpose. Performance of leaf and root herbivores did not differ among squash varieties, but herbivore feeding preferences varied, with root herbivores preferring varieties with high cucurbitacin content and leaf herbivores preferring varieties selected for consumption.

Genotypic Variation in Plant Traits, Chemical Defenses, and Resistance Against Insect Herbivores in Avocado (Persea americana) Across a Domestication Gradient

Johnattan Hernandez-Cumplido et al.

Summary: By studying different avocado genotypes, it was found that the Hass variety had smaller seeds and fruits, lower total phenolics content, and weaker chemical defenses on leaves, but there were no significant differences in resistance against two insect herbivores.
