Unravelling the effects of treated wastewater discharges on the water quality in a coastal lagoon system (Ria Formosa, South Portugal): Relevance of hydrodynamic conditions

A. Cravo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the influence of treated wastewater disposal on Ria Formosa coastal lagoon in Portugal. The results showed that the influence of wastewater discharge was minor in areas with stronger hydrodynamics and higher wastewater load, while areas with lower load and weaker flushing had poorer water quality.

Water quality of a southwest Iberian coastal lagoon: Spatial and temporal variability

Alexandra Rosa et al.

Summary: This study aims to characterize the spatial and temporal variability of Ria Formosa water quality at two scales: short-term (among seasons) and long-term (over the past 40 years). Field surveys and data analysis reveal spatial variability patterns along the Ria Formosa and temporal heterogeneity influenced by precipitation, sediments, wind, and water exchanges with the adjacent ocean. The data from the past 40 years suggest a decreasing trend in nutrients concentration and a marginal increase of dissolved oxygen, indicating an improvement in water quality over time.

Whole-Ecosystem Experiment Illustrates Short Timescale Hydrodynamic, Light, and Nutrient Control of Primary Production in a Terminal Slough

Luke C. Loken et al.

Summary: Estuaries are productive aquatic ecosystems, but the understanding of their primary production patterns and drivers is incomplete. A whole-ecosystem experiment in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta showed that hydrodynamics and various factors influence primary production. Stratification and light availability have a stronger influence on primary production than nitrogen. Nitrogen and chlorophyll are positively related, suggesting that stratification may trigger nutrient limitation. Nitrogen can become limiting in time and space, especially during episodic stratification events.

Phytoplankton photophysiology varies depending on nitrogen and light availability at the subsurface chlorophyll maximum in the northern Chukchi Sea

Eunho Ko et al.

Summary: Vertical distributions of phytoplankton in the Arctic Ocean are characterized by a very narrow subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layer formed every summer after the sea ice retreats. This study examined the photophysiological properties of phytoplankton in the SCM layer in the northern Chukchi Sea during the summers of 2015-2018. It was found that the SCM depth differed significantly between the northwestern and northeastern Chukchi Sea, and there was a decrease in the maximum quantum yield of photochemistry in photosystem II (F-v/F-m) in the phytoplankton in the northeastern Chukchi Sea.
