Crataegus oxyacantha Extract as a Biostimulant to Enhance Tolerance to Salinity in Tomato Plants

Imane Naboulsi et al.

Summary: The study found that Crataegus oxyacantha extract as a biostimulant has a significant improvement effect on tomato plants under salt stress. The application of C. oxyacantha extract promotes plant growth and photosynthesis, increases the content of soluble sugars and amino acids, and reduces the damage of salt stress to plants. In addition, C. oxyacantha extract also enhances the activities of antioxidant enzymes, helping plants cope with stress.

iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomic analysis provides insight into the drought-stress response in maize seedlings

Wen Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, the proteomic changes in maize leaves under drought stress were investigated using iTRAQ-based protein labeling technology. The results showed that drought stress led to changes in the abundance of a variety of proteins related to cell redox homeostasis, cell wall organization, photosynthesis, abscisic acid biosynthesis, and stress-response processes. The findings provide insights into the overall mechanism of drought-stress tolerance and important information for breeding of drought-tolerant maize.

Molecular mechanisms associated with microbial biostimulant-mediated growth enhancement, priming and drought stress tolerance in maize plants

Motseoa Lephatsi et al.

Summary: A study revealed that a microbial-based biostimulant can promote maize growth and enhance drought tolerance by inducing metabolic reconfigurations. Morphophysiological measurements and targeted metabolomics approach uncovered the impact of the biostimulant on maize plants under different water conditions (well-watered, mild and severe drought), which was further supported by gene expression and DNA methylation profiles.

Date palm waste compost promotes plant growth and nutrient transporter genes expression in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

Emna Ghouili et al.

Summary: Organic fertilizers have a promoting effect on the growth and yield of barley, increasing straw yield, biological yield, and the number of grains. They also enhance the content of photosynthesizing pigments and nutrient uptake in plants. Furthermore, real-time PCR analysis reveals differential expression of candidate genes involved in nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism in barley, suggesting their role in nutrient absorption and transport.

Compost Enhances Forage Yield and Quality of River Saltbush in Arid Conditions

Jianjian Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the forage yield and quality of river saltbush as affected by compost application in saline soil. Compost addition increased forage yield, crude protein content, and mineral content, while reducing Na+ and oxalate concentrations in the leaves. Compost also improved the activity of polyphenol oxidase and catalase, alleviating the negative effects of soil salinity and enhancing the growth of river saltbush plants, making them valuable as animal feed.

Transcriptomics of Biostimulation of Plants Under Abiotic Stress

Susana Gonzalez-Morales et al.

Summary: Plant biostimulants are compounds or living microorganisms that alter plant development, impacting various aspects such as morphology, physiology, and transcriptomics, ultimately improving plant adaptation in the environment. While biostimulants have been extensively studied, there is still a lack of reviews specifically focused on areas like transcriptomics. Distinguishing the specific impact of biostimulants from other agricultural products is important for commercial registration processes.

Morpho-physiological investigations in transgenic tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) over expressing OsRGLP1 gene

Sumera Perveen et al.

Summary: The OsRGLP1 gene was successfully overexpressed in tomato plants using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, resulting in noticeable morpho-physiological traits, increased SOD activity, and elevated H2O2 levels. Transgenic lines showed higher chlorophyll content and relative water content in leaves, as well as lower electrolytic leakage. Additionally, they exhibited dwarf phenotypic features, radial secondary growth in vascular cambium regions, and increased density and diversity of trichomes. Further exploration is needed to understand the functional aspects of the transgene and its role in stress responses.

Genome-Wide Identification and Characterization of Short-Chain Dehydrogenase/Reductase (SDR) Gene Family in Medicago truncatula

Shuhan Yu et al.

Summary: Short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) belongs to the NAD(P)(H)-dependent oxidoreductase superfamily and participates in diverse metabolisms. In Medicago truncatula, 213 MtSDR genes were identified, categorized into seven subgroups based on phylogenetic analysis, and divided into three types based on the cofactor-binding site and active site. Many MtSDRs show tissue-specific expression and contain cis-acting elements responsive to plant hormones and stresses in their promoters. Genes from certain MtSDR families are responsive to drought, salt, and cold, providing valuable information for future investigation on the biological functions of MtSDRs, especially in abiotic stress adaptation.

Recent Advances in the Molecular Effects of Biostimulants in Plants: An Overview

Miguel Baltazar et al.

Summary: Plant biostimulants are recognized as a sustainable solution to meet the demands for higher agricultural output with lower resources, offering potential benefits in improving plant growth, increasing crop production and quality, and alleviating stress effects. However, challenges arise from the multi-molecular nature and varying composition of commercially available biostimulants when attempting to elucidate their underlying mechanisms. Recent studies at the molecular level have started to reveal the pathways triggered by certain biostimulants at the cellular and gene level, which could lead to further refinement of these treatments.
