A global review of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants: Understanding their occurrence, fate and impact

Aarif Yaseen et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a major concern for the environment, with wastewater treatment plants being the main pathway for their entry into ecosystems. Research on microplastics in wastewater treatment plants has primarily been conducted in Europe, followed by the United States, Canada, Asia, and Australia. Personal care and cosmetic products are the main sources of microplastics in these plants, with microfibers and fragments being the most common forms observed. Understanding the fate of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants is crucial for their management.

Controlling factors of microplastic fibre settling through a water column

Thu Ha Nguyen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the settling velocity of microplastic fibres in water and proposes that length, curliness, and settling orientation are key factors affecting their settling velocity. Experimental findings support the hypothesis that changing the settling orientation from horizontal to vertical can increase the settling velocity of fibres longer than 1 mm, while fibre curliness can significantly reduce the settling velocity. Fibres shorter than 1 mm mostly settle horizontally, and their settling velocity is unaffected by curliness.

An audit of microplastic abundance throughout three Australian wastewater treatment plants

Shima Ziajahromi et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are important pathways for microplastics to enter the environment, with the majority of microplastics retained in sludge. Limited information on microplastics in Australian sludge and biosolids warrants further research. This study shows that most microplastics are intercepted and transported to landfills during the treatment process, making landfills potential important sinks (and future sources) of microplastics.

A review of the removal of microplastics in global wastewater treatment plants: Characteristics and mechanisms

Weiyi Liu et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the abundance and removal of microplastics in 38 wastewater treatment plants worldwide and found different characteristics of microplastics in different treatment technologies. The research revealed that filter-based treatment technologies showed the best removal efficiency for microplastics, and different types and sizes of microplastics were removed in different ways in various treatment processes.

Microplastic distributions in a domestic wastewater treatment plant: Removal efficiency, seasonal variation and influence of sampling technique

Eric A. Ben-David et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of a municipal WWTP in removing microplastics using different sampling and detection methods. Results showed that the majority of microplastics were removed by the secondary treatment stage, and seasonal variations can affect the concentration of microplastics in effluents.

Abundance and characteristics of microplastics in soils with different agricultural practices: Importance of sources with internal origin and environmental fate

Seung-Kyu Kim et al.

Summary: The occurrence of microplastics in agricultural soils is influenced by internal sources and external environmental factors, with different types of soils showing unique MP abundance and characteristics. High PE sheet appearance indicates significant input of MPs through the fragmentation of applied PE film or surface runoff, while a drastic decline in small-sized MPs in MS > RS > GS-out suggests significant removal of MPs through surface runoff and/or infiltration.

Potential Effects of Microplastic on Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi

Eva F. Leifheit et al.

Summary: Microplastics have diverse effects on soil and plant growth, altering soil structure and microbial activity, which in turn affects the abundance and activity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The impacts of microplastics may also change how plants respond to other global change factors, highlighting the need for further research on their overall impact on ecosystems.

A review on the characteristics of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants: A source for toxic chemicals

Amir Hossein Hamidian et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are a significant source of microplastics discharged into the environment, with their characteristics in different environmental matrices still largely unknown. Most microplastics in water samples are composed of PET, PS, PP, and PE, with a significant proportion being removed during primary and secondary treatment stages, and MBR being the most efficient tertiary treatment technology. The majority of microplastics removed during wastewater treatment end up in sewage sludge and are released into the environment via sludge applications.

Urban Stormwater Runoff: A Major Pathway for Anthropogenic Particles, Black Rubbery Fragments, and Other Types of Microplastics to Urban Receiving Waters

Larissa M. Werbowski et al.

Summary: The study found that urban stormwater runoff contains microplastics and other anthropogenic debris, with concentrations higher than wastewater treatment plant effluent, impacting aquatic ecosystems. Fibers and rubber fragments were the most common morphologies, indicating a need for prioritizing stormwater mitigation strategies. Rain gardens were shown to effectively remove microplastics and other debris, suggesting their potential as a mitigation strategy for microplastic pollution.

Baseline assessment of microplastic concentrations in marine and freshwater environments of a developing Southeast Asian country, Viet Nam

Emilie Strady et al.

Summary: Assessment of microplastic concentrations in aquatic environments is increasing worldwide, but remains under-evaluated in developing countries. Developed protocols for sampling, analysis, and observations may not fully adapt to developing countries due to disparities in resources. Researchers in Vietnam have developed an adapted methodology for monitoring microplastic pollution, finding that fibers dominate over fragments in most environments.
