Upgrading ammonia-nitrogen from manure into body proteins in black soldier fly larvae

Alejandro Parodi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that at least 13% of NH3-N from manure can be incorporated into the body mass of black soldier fly larvae. The tracer was found in both insoluble and soluble nitrogen fractions within the larval body, including proteins. The results provide valuable insights into the potential of using black soldier fly larvae for manure management and as a source of circular protein.

Effect of different environmental conditions on the growth and development of Black Soldier Fly Larvae and its utilization in solid waste management and pollution mitigation

Muhammad Salam et al.

Summary: The current waste treatment techniques in developing countries fail to meet the standards of appropriate waste management systems. The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) offers a potential and economical alternative for recycling biological waste due to its proven capabilities in waste degradation and biotransformation. This study investigated the interactions between municipal and organic waste using Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) as a growing medium, and revealed that BSFL can enhance the quality of the final product and promote the degradation of organic waste. Although BSFL cannot effectively directly degrade municipal solid waste, it can reduce it by efficiently degrading organic waste. The study also identified the optimal environmental conditions for BSFL breeding and growth, and inferred the most suitable cities for developing the BSFL waste treatment system in Pakistan.

Exploring the role of Black Soldier Fly Larva technology for sustainable management of municipal solid waste in developing countries

Muhammad Salam et al.

Summary: The rapid increase in population in Pakistan has led to a significant rise in municipal solid waste, causing serious public health and environmental issues. Current waste management techniques in Pakistan are inadequate and not cost-effective. The black soldier fly larvae technology offers a viable and environmentally friendly solution for managing organic waste effectively.
