Connecting spatial structure in subtidal benthic communities with temporal variability in bottom temperature and dissolved oxygen along an upwelling coast

Aldo Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study analyzed subtidal benthic surveys data from six sites along the upwelling coast of central Chile, finding that high-frequency temperature variability, 95th percentile of bottom temperatures, and the duration of hypoxia events explained a significant proportion of the total variance in community structure. These factors, combined with substrate type, accounted for 84% of the total variance in benthic communities across the study region. The findings suggest that benthic species' physiological tolerance to extreme conditions, such as intense warming and hypoxia events, play a key role in structuring subtidal communities.

Deoxygenation in Marginal Seas of the Indian Ocean

S. Wajih A. Naqvi

Summary: This article discusses oxygen distributions and deoxygenation trends in the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Andaman Sea. Human activities impact the Persian Gulf, causing hypoxia in the central and southern regions, while the Red Sea is less affected. The northern Red Sea is experiencing ongoing deoxygenation, and warming in the NWIO marginal seas may intensify the Arabian Sea oxygen minimum zone. Additionally, there have been slight but significant decreases in oxygen content in the Andaman Sea over time.

Evidences and drivers of ocean deoxygenation off Peru over recent past decades

D. Espinoza-Morriberon et al.

Summary: Deoxygenation poses a major threat to coastal ocean health, impacting marine life and key biogeochemical cycles. Both observations and models suggest that nearshore deoxygenation off Peru is attributed to the slowdown of near-equatorial eastward currents.

A committed fourfold increase in ocean oxygen loss

Andreas Oschlies

Summary: The model simulations suggest that ocean deoxygenation will continue to worsen in the future, even if CO2 emissions are stopped. This will result in increased pressure on deep-ocean ecosystems, with a potential decline in metabolic viability of deep-sea animals by up to 25%.

Recent Changes in the Low-Level Jet along the Subtropical West Coast of South America

Catalina Aguirre et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown significant changes in the number and duration of coastal low-level jet (CLLJ) events off central Chile, with an increase in CLLJ events in the whole study area during winter and a decrease observed at lower latitudes during summer. The changes are attributed to alterations in central pressures and the frequency of extratropical, migratory anticyclones reaching the coast of South America.

High-Frequency Variability of the Surface Ocean Properties Off Central Chile During the Upwelling Season

Catalina Aguirre et al.

Summary: The ocean off south-central Chile is influenced by seasonal upwelling driven by the southeast Pacific subtropical anticyclone, with fluctuations in coastal winds leading to significant changes in oceanic conditions and air-sea heat and gas exchanges. The high frequency variability of coastal winds plays a key role in influencing surface ocean properties in this region.
