Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Thalassemia-free and graft-versus-host-free survival: outcomes of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for thalassemia major, Turkish experience

M. Akif Yesilipek et al.

Summary: The study analyzed national data on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for thalassemia major patients in Turkey, finding that transplanting before the age of 7 with a matched donor can improve outcomes, and that different time points and donor types have varying impacts on transplant results.

Active Screening of Intestinal Colonization of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae for Subsequent Bloodstream Infection in Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Weijie Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of intestinal carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) colonization and bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by CRE in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) recipients. The results showed that CR-KP colonization was an independent risk factor for CRE-related BSI. Patients receiving multi-drug therapy within 24 hours had slightly better prognosis than those in the single-drug treatment group.

The burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in the WHO European region in 2019: a cross-country systematic analysis

Tomislav Mestrovic et al.

Summary: This study presents comprehensive estimates of the burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the WHO European region, highlighting the serious threat it poses to public health. The findings emphasize the need for targeted efforts, investments, and continuous outcome-based research to address AMR in this region.

Do Weekly Surveillance Cultures Contribute to Antibiotic Stewardship and Correlate with Outcome of HSCT in Children? A Multicenter Real-World Experience of 5 Years from the Indian Subcontinent

Rakesh Dhanya et al.

Summary: This retrospective analysis of pediatric bone marrow transplantation centers found that choosing empirical antibiotic therapy based on weekly rectal swab surveillance cultures is not justified in HSCT recipients with nonmalignant hematologic disorders, even in regions with high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance. Colonization showed no correlation with clinical outcomes.

Antibiotic Resistant Bloodstream Infections in Pediatric Patients Receiving Chemotherapy or Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant: Factors Associated with Development of Resistance, Intensive Care Admission and Mortality

Elio Castagnola et al.

Summary: Bloodstream infections (BSI) caused by resistant Gram-negatives in children receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy or HSCT have high occurrence rates, with previous exposure to antibiotics or colonization of resistant pathogens being possible causes. Resistant Gram-negatives are significantly associated with ICU admission and mortality, with treating centers playing an important role in the outcome of treatment. The evidence of significant center-level variations on AR, ICU admission, and mortality emphasizes the need for careful local antibiotic stewardship and infection control programs.
