Antibacterial activity of Punica granatum L. and Areca nut (P.A) combined extracts against some food born pathogenic bacteria

Neda Jam et al.

Summary: The combined extracts of Punica granatum L. and Areca nut showed antibacterial effects against resistant bacteria in individual and biofilm forms. The ethanolic extract was found to be more effective than the methanolic extract. The extracts had a direct relationship with concentration in inhibiting the formation of biofilms, destruction of biofilms, and prevention of metabolic activity of bacteria, with the highest inhibitory effects observed on Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, and Enterobacter aerogenes.

Mechanisms of RAW264.7 macrophages immunomodulation mediated by polysaccharide from mung bean skin based on RNA-seq analysis

Li Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the immunomodulation properties of mung bean skin polysaccharide (MBP) on macrophages and uncovered its possible molecular mechanisms. The results showed that MBP enhances macrophage activity and stimulates the production of reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, and cytokines. Transcriptomic analysis identified differentially expressed genes and KEGG analysis revealed the involvement of Toll-like receptor 4, mitogen-activated protein kinases, and nuclear factor-kappa B signaling pathways. Western blot analysis confirmed the activation of these pathways and their essential role in MBP-mediated macrophage activation. The study suggests that MBP can regulate macrophage immune response through TLR4-mediated MAPKs and NF-kappa B signaling pathways, making it a potential natural immunomodulator for functional foods.

Simultaneous determination of areca nut- and tobacco-specific alkaloids in saliva by LC-MS/MS: Distribution and transformation of alkaloids in oral cavity

Yuan-Jhe Chang et al.

Summary: Combining areca nut and tobacco increases the risk of oral cancer, and saliva is a better diagnostic material. This study used LC-MS/MS to quantify five areca nut-specific alkaloids and three tobacco-specific alkaloids in human saliva. The distribution of ASAs in the oral cavity is affected by the hydrolysis and metabolic activity, and oral mucosa rather than saliva contributes to the metabolism of ASAs.

Genetic toxicology and toxicokinetics of arecoline and related areca nut compounds: an updated review

Nuno G. Oliveira et al.

Summary: Areca nut is consumed by over 600 million individuals and classified as carcinogenic to humans, particularly in South Asia, East Africa, and tropical Pacific regions. Arecoline is the principal active compound of Areca nut and has been systematically studied in several in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity endpoints. The complexity of the chemicals involved in Areca nut makes it a challenge in genetic toxicology, with both positive and negative genotoxicity findings reported in the literature.

Summary: Resin, as a synthetic macroporous polymer adsorbent, selectively adsorbs target components in water and nonwater systems through electrostatic force, hydrogen bond, and complexation for separation and purification of substances. Macroporous resins have high adsorption capacity for organic molecules and are widely used in the separation and purification of bioactive substances, with the purified products exhibiting strong antioxidant activity.

Overexpression of FOXA2 attenuates cigarette smoke-induced cellular senescence and lung inflammation through inhibition of the p38 and Erk1/2 MAPK pathways

Yixiu Tao et al.

Summary: FOXA2 is underexpressed in CS-exposed mouse lungs, associated with cell senescence and inflammation. Overexpression of FOXA2 delays senescence and inflammation, potentially through regulation of the p38 and Erk1/2 MAPK signaling pathways.

Potential mechanisms underlying the protective effects of Tricholoma matsutake singer peptides against LPS-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 macrophages

Mengqi Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the protective effects of Tricholoma matsutake Singer peptide on LPS-induced inflammation, including upregulating antioxidant enzyme activity, reducing ROS production, inhibiting inflammatory pathways activation, improving mitochondrial respiration, and identifying potential anti-inflammatory peptides. Overall, T. matsutake peptides show promise as natural ingredients for developing novel functional foods.
