Examining the release of synthetic microfibres to the environment via two major pathways: Atmospheric deposition and treated wastewater effluent

I. E. Napper et al.

Summary: Research has found that both laundering and wear of textiles in normal use contribute to the discharge of synthetic microfibres into aquatic environments. This study aimed to compare the quantities of microfibres entering the marine environment via wastewater discharge and atmospheric deposition, and evaluated areas of high and low population density. Results showed that atmospheric deposition was the dominant pathway, releasing a much larger amount of fibres compared to treated wastewater effluent. Potential options to reduce microfibre release are discussed, with emphasis on intervention at the textile design stage.

Nanoplastics measurements in Northern and Southern polar ice

Dusan Materic et al.

Summary: It has been established that various anthropogenic contaminants have already reached all the world's pristine locations, including the polar regions. Plastic pollution has been shown as a durable novel pollutant, and, since recently, smaller and smaller plastics particles have been identified in various environments (air, water and soil). However, far less is known about the plastics debris that fragmented to the sub-micrometre size (nanoplastics).

Microplastics in the Weddell Sea (Antarctica): A Forensic Approach for Discrimination between Environmental and Vessel-Induced Microplastics

Clara Leistenschneider et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution was found in the surface and subsurface waters of the Weddell Sea, with a significant portion of identified fragments originating from vessel-induced contamination. Differentiation based on visual characteristics and FTIR spectroscopy may not be sufficient for accurately determining contamination sources.

Modeling the Accumulation and Transport of Microplastics by Sea Ice

A. S. Mountford et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is widespread in the marine environment, with emerging research on microplastic pollution in Antarctic sea ice. Sea ice serves as an important seasonal sink for microplastics, with positively buoyant microplastics dominating Arctic sea ice and neutrally buoyant plastics dominating Southern Ocean sea ice. Further observational data is needed to understand the transport and accumulation of microplastics in the Southern Ocean.

Are we contaminating our samples? A preliminary study to investigate procedural contamination during field sampling and processing for microplastic and anthropogenic microparticles

C. Gwinnett et al.

Summary: Methods for sampling and analysing microplastics and microfibers in water samples have improved over the years, but techniques for reducing procedural contamination still need further development. Procedural contamination accounted for a significant portion of the total microplastics and microfibers found in samples, with crew clothing identified as a predominant source of contamination. Recommendations for anti-contamination protocols were made based on the study findings.

Atmospheric deposition of microplastics in the coastal zone: Characteristics and relationship with meteorological factors

Karolina Szewc et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the quantitative and qualitative compositions of microplastics deposited from the atmosphere in the coastal zone, and investigated the links with meteorological factors. The deposited microplastics were predominantly fibers, with smaller size classes dominating and mainly originating from textiles, packaging materials, and fishing gear. Air mass trajectory analysis showed that microplastics deposited in Gdynia mainly came from local sources.

Bioretention cells remove microplastics from urban stormwater

Kelsey Smyth et al.

Summary: A 2-year field study on microplastic pathways in urban stormwater runoff and bioretention cells found that urban stormwater runoff is a concentrated source of microplastics whose concentrations are influenced by specific climate variables. Bioretention cells are effective in filtering out microplastics and preventing their spread downstream, highlighting the potential for current low impact development practices to limit microplastic contamination in larger aquatic systems.

At-risk marine biodiversity faces extensive, expanding, and intensifying human impacts

Casey C. O'Hara et al.

Summary: The study reveals that marine species worldwide are sensitive to human activities and climate change, with impacts expanding and intensifying over time. Fishing activities dominate impacts in national waters, while climate stressors are driving the expansion and intensification of impacts.

Microplastics and other anthropogenic particles in Antarctica: Using penguins as biological samplers

Joana Fragao et al.

Summary: Microplastics were found to be present in the scat samples of Adelie, chinstrap, and gentoo penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula and Scotia Sea, with polyethylene and polyester being the main components. Other anthropogenic particles were also identified in high numbers. This study highlights the need for further research to understand the impact of microplastics and other anthropogenic particles on Antarctic ecosystems.

The role of kelp in the transport and fate of negatively buoyant marine plastic

Andrew Turner et al.

Summary: Observations of negatively buoyant plastics washed up on a beach in southwest England in association with deposits of kelp show that these plastics are primarily transported landwards through detachment of kelp from the bed during strong winds or tides, carrying benthic plastics with them. This provides valuable insights into the composition of plastics encountered in the benthic environment in temperate coastal regions.

Amit K. Mishra et al.

Summary: The menace of plastic pollution in the oceans is a global problem, with microplastics presenting a threat to ecosystems and food webs. Multidecadal poleward shift of the southern boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current off East Antarctica

Kaihe Yamazaki et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the movement of the southern boundary (SB) of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current is influenced by the upper overturning circulation. Through a reexamination of hydrographic data, it was found that there is overall warming and a poleward shift of subsurface isotherms of SB.
