Long-Term Variability of the Kuroshio Shelf Intrusion and Its Relationship to Upper-Ocean Current and Temperature Variability in the East China Sea

Jiwon Kang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term variability of Kuroshio shelf intrusion (KSI) northeast of Taiwan and its relationship with current and temperature variability in the East China Sea (ECS). The results showed that the KSI had significant changes in the 2000s, while it was relatively stable in the 1990s and 2010s, accompanied by a westward shift of the Kuroshio axis and warming.

Numerical investigation of the control factors driving Zhe-Min Coastal Current

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the major driving factors of the Zhe-Min Coastal Current (ZMCC) along the Chinese mainland coast and validates a model using observational data. The study finds that while wind plays an important role in regulating ZMCC, the discharge from the Changjiang River determines the southern boundary of the Zhe-Min coastal region.

Copepods as Indicators of Different Water Masses during the Northeast Monsoon Prevailing Period in the Northeast Taiwan

Yan-Guo Wang et al.

Summary: It is possible to trace the origin and pathways of water masses through the study of specific bioindicators, as shown in this study focusing on copepods. The research identified the water masses as mainly derived from northeast monsoon surface waters, Kuroshio intrusion water, and mixed water masses, and determined the indicator species for each water mass.

Seasonal variability and dynamics of coastal sea surface temperature fronts in the East China Sea

Lu Cao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed sea surface temperature fronts in the East China Sea using satellite observations, revealing significant seasonal variations in front activities driven by alongshore wind, SST, and river discharge. The research provides insights into the understanding of frontal activities, mechanisms of frontogenesis, and implications for fisheries management and oceanic pollution control.

Seasonal Variability of SST Fronts in the Inner Sea of Chiloe and Its Adjacent Coastal Ocean, Northern Patagonia

Gonzalo S. Saldias et al.

Summary: Surface oceanic fronts, particularly Sea Surface Temperature (SST) fronts, in the northern Patagonia region were analyzed for the period 2003-2019. The study found high probability of frontal occurrences off Chiloe Island, especially in summer and fall, with increased gradient magnitudes primarily in the spring and summer, suggesting the formation of coastal upwelling fronts. Additionally, the analysis revealed dominant variability modes in SST gradient magnitudes, with meridional coastal fronts dominating in summer and SST fronts inside the Inner Sea of Chiloe dominating in spring and early summer. Future research is recommended to focus on studying the vertical structure and variability of coastal fronts in the Inner Sea of Chiloe and its adjacent coastal ocean.

New Insight Into the Onshore Intrusion of the Kuroshio Into the East China Sea

Xuan Cui et al.

Summary: A modified analytical solution was developed to simulate the flow pattern of the Kuroshio intrusion northeast of Taiwan, maintaining horizontal momentum balance. The new model accurately predicts the direction of the Kuroshio intrusion and aligns well with observational data, offering potential applications in regions with different flow patterns.

Progress of Studies on Circulation Dynamics in the East China Sea: The Kuroshio Exchanges With the Shelf Currents

Zhiqiang Liu et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent advances in the circulation dynamics of the Kuroshio and its interaction with shelf currents in the East China Sea (ECS). The study found that the annual averaged volume transport of the Kuroshio varies between 19 and 24 Sv, with no consensus on its seasonal peak. The Kuroshio intrusions and exchanges with shelf currents are influenced by various factors such as planetary beta-effect, topography, and Kuroshio intensity and shear stress.

Modulation of Shelf Circulations Under Multiple River Discharges in the East China Sea

Ruiming Wu et al.

Summary: This study used a numerical model to investigate the influence of river plumes on the circulation of East Asian Marginal Seas, finding that riverine freshwater discharge can alter density structure and dynamic height of the receiving seas, thus affecting shelf circulation. Both the Changjiang and Pearl Rivers play important roles in regulating the East China Sea shelf circulation, particularly in modifying the coastal current and the Taiwan Warm Current.
