Monitoring coastline variations in the Pearl River Estuary from 1978 to 2018 by integrating Canny edge detection and Otsu methods using long time series Landsat dataset

Xinyi Hu et al.

Summary: The study found significant changes in the Pearl River Estuary coastline over the past 40 years, especially in the western area where land reclamation and dam construction had a greater impact. Both natural factors and human activities have influenced the coastline variation in the region.

Analysis on the Dynamics of Coastline and Reclamation in Pearl River Estuary in China for Nearly Last Half Century

Xiaohao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the changes in the coastline and sea reclamation of the Pearl River Estuary over the past half a century using satellite images. The results show an increase in the total length of the coastline and the reclamation area. In recent years, the purpose of reclamation has shifted from agriculture and pond culture to transportation, industrial development, and urban construction.

Changes in the distribution of surface sediment in Pearl River Estuary, 1975-2017, largely due to human activity

Xing Wei et al.

Summary: In recent decades, the surface sediments in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), China, have experienced significant disturbance from human activities, leading to an overall coarsening trend in the average grain size. This trend is mainly attributed to the sharp reduction in upstream sediment load since the 1980s, as well as channel dredging and sand mining in PRE. These activities have also contributed to the patchy distribution of sediments in the estuary.

Study on Spatiotemporal Evolution of the Yellow River Delta Coastline from 1976 to 2020

Chengming Li et al.

Summary: The Yellow River Delta in China has shown a spatial pattern of northern landward retreat and southern seaward expansion. In the Qingshuigou region, land area and coastline length initially increased, then stabilized. In the Diaokou region, the land area decrease rate has slowed down over time.

Summary: The study revealed an increase in the total length of the coastline of the GHMGBA over the past four decades, with artificial coastline increasing and other types decreasing. The variations in the coastline were mainly attributed to human activities, showing an overall trend of advancing towards the ocean.

Morphological consequences of upstream water and sediment changes and estuarine engineering activities in Pearl River Estuary channels over the last 50 years

Wang Yong-Hong et al.

Summary: The study found that changes in the geometry of the Pearl River Estuary over the past 50 years can be divided into three stages. The first stage was mainly influenced by natural factors, the second stage was primarily caused by human activities, and the third stage showed a slight depositional trend regulated by policies.

Mapping of Coastline Changes in Athens Riviera over the Past 76 Year's Measurements

Hariklia D. Skilodimou et al.

Summary: Mapping and monitoring coastline changes in Athens Riviera over the past 76 years have revealed significant alterations mainly caused by human interference. The study shows that human interventions have led to major coastline changes in areas such as Faliro Bay, Alimos, and Glyfada, while the coastal regions adjacent to Athens metropolitan area have experienced the highest modifications. The analysis indicates that the rate of coastline changes slowed down after 1987, with 40% increase in coastline length and 2.67 km(2) of land reclaimed to the sea over the past 76 years. The applied method using aerial photographs and GIS techniques proves effective for coastal monitoring and management.

Human Impacts on Estuarine Erosion-Deposition in Southern Central Vietnam: Observation and Hydrodynamic Simulation

Vu Tuan Anh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in erosion and deposition processes at a river mouth in Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam, following the construction of a jetty. The jetty alters the hydrodynamic and erosion-deposition processes, leading to increased deposition on the southern coast and intensified erosion on the north coast during the southwest monsoon. Sediments mainly come from local sources, accumulating more during the northeast monsoon compared to the southwest monsoon.
