Atlantification alters the reproduction of jellyfish Aglantha digitale in the European Arctic

Maciej K. Manko et al.

Summary: The changing environment in the European Arctic has led to a shift in boreal species ranges and seasonal rhythms, potentially affecting the food web structure. The study found a decreasing abundance of the cnidarian Aglantha digitale in the epipelagic waters of the European Arctic, with a higher migration towards the north with the eastern branch of the West Spitsbergen Current. Modeling techniques showed that A. digitale reproduced earlier in the southern region, leading to an earlier descent to deeper waters. Additionally, smaller jellyfish were prevalent during years with high water temperature and salinity, suggesting a second reproductive cycle. The study also revealed that the northern population of A. digitale originates from the south and is advected northward with the West Spitsbergen Current. It highlights the need to include jellyfish in zooplankton monitoring.

Comparison of macroalgae meadows in warm Atlantic versus cold Arctic regimes in the high-Arctic Svalbard

Jozef M. Wiktor et al.

Summary: A warmer Arctic with less sea ice is likely to result in improved growth conditions for macroalgae. However, the study found that the density and condition of macroalgae varied significantly between a warm, ice-free site influenced by the Atlantic and a cold, Arctic site with seasonal ice cover. The differences in macroalgal density and condition were only observed at depths down to 5 meters.

Biogeochemical and ecological variability during the late summer-early autumn transition at an ice-floe drift station in the Central Arctic Ocean

Nicole L. Schanke et al.

Summary: With the annual decrease in Arctic summer sea ice, changes in biogeochemistry and ecology are likely to occur in the Central Arctic Ocean. A study on water column sampling during late summer to early autumn found a decrease in nutrient concentrations, DMSPp levels, photosynthetic efficiency, and biological productivity as upper water column stratification weakened. Phytoplankton analysis revealed a diverse community with potential expansion of the ecological niche of Pyramimonas spp. as open, ice-free waters increase.

Coming home - Boreal ecosystem claims Atlantic sector of the Arctic

Hedvig Kriszta Csapo et al.

Summary: The Atlantification of the European Arctic is a complex phenomenon driven mainly by the changing properties of Atlantic water, leading to the alteration of local ecosystems towards a more temperate state and the appearance/range expansion of subarctic-boreal species at higher latitudes. This poses a threat to Arctic marine communities, with increasing biological complexity, (re)colonisation of boreal organisms, and the role of floating plastic debris in aiding the distribution of marine taxa as key factors.

Yes, they can: polar bears Ursus maritimus successfully hunt Svalbard reindeer Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus

Lech Stempniewicz et al.

Summary: Polar bears in Svalbard are increasingly hunting reindeer, possibly due to reduced ice cover, longer periods spent on land, and a growing reindeer population. This suggests that polar bears in Svalbard are consuming more terrestrial food and may have an enhanced role as apex predators in the terrestrial ecosystem.

Stronger Variability in the Arctic Ocean Induced by Sea Ice Decline in a Warming Climate: Freshwater Storage, Dynamic Sea Level and Surface Circulation

Qiang Wang

Summary: This study reveals that ongoing Arctic sea ice decline significantly intensifies the decadal variability of Arctic liquid freshwater content, sea level, and upper ocean circulation, indicating an increasing vulnerability of the Arctic Ocean to winds in a warming world. Extreme marine events may occur more often in the future as the physical and potentially biogeochemical environments of the Arctic Ocean become more vulnerable to variations in surface winds with sea ice decline.

Ice-Associated Amphipods in a Pan-Arctic Scenario of Declining Sea Ice

Haakon Hop et al.

Summary: Recent research shows that the sea-ice macrofauna in the Arctic has changed over the past decades, with a decline in ice amphipods and benthic amphipods and variations in species composition among different locations. The disappearance of multiyear sea ice has led to a reduction in important species, while benthic amphipods have higher abundance near land.

L. Kotwicki et al.

Summary: The blue mussel Mytilus spp. complex has reappeared in the high Arctic in Svalbard after a thousand years, most likely due to transportation and natural or anthropogenic flotsam. Studies have found genetic similarities between mussels from Svalbard and populations from Western Europe, Faroe Island, Scotland, and Norway, indicating a possible migration from these regions.

Gammarus (Amphipoda) species competitive exclusion or coexistence as a result of climate change in the Arctic?

Jan Marcin Weslawski et al.

Summary: The study examined the coexistence of two congeneric amphipods, boreal Gammarus oceanicus, and arctic G. setosus in the Svalbard archipelago. The distribution patterns of the two species were influenced by environmental conditions, with potential antagonistic relationship at a small spatial scale. Despite predicted changes in distribution range, both species may continue to coexist in Svalbard due to their wide environmental tolerance and the heterogeneous coastal habitats.
