Extreme wave events and sampling variability

Elzbieta M. Bitner-Gregersen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates, using numerical simulations, the challenges that sampling variability brings in the interpretation of nonlinear wave characteristics of the surface elevation when single 20- or 30-min field wave records are used in an analysis. The study shows that having a single 20- or 30-min wave record may make it difficult to determine the degree of wave field nonlinearity and the accuracy of derived wave parameters, as well as to evaluate the validity of wave models. Numerical simulations are shown to be important supporting tools for wave field measurements.

Probabilistic assessment of rogue wave occurrence in directional wave fields

Cagil Kirezci et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relation between rogue wave occurrence statistics and properties of the directional wind-wave spectrum. It finds that directional Pi(2) is the best indicator, and that the probability of rogue wave occurrence increases at high directionality where modulational instability should be suppressed.

Real-world rogue wave probabilities

Dion Hafner et al.

Summary: Rogue waves, at least twice as high as surrounding waves, are dangerous ocean phenomena with no accurate forecast yet. By analyzing a large amount of observational data, a new study finds that the occurrence of rogue waves depends on sea state, with traditional parameters being weak predictors. Instead, crest-trough correlation is revealed as the dominating parameter influencing rogue wave risk in various conditions.

Alvise Benetazzo et al.

Summary: This study uses spatio-temporal statistics to analyze extreme sea waves during tropical storm Kong-rey in the Northwestern Pacific, finding that waves are highest to the northeast of the cyclone and more extreme waves may occur in the south/southwest regions.

Statistics of long-crested extreme waves in single and mixed sea states

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: The translation emphasizes the study on extreme waves under unimodal and bimodal spectra in deep water conditions. It is found that extreme wave statistics are influenced significantly by the relative water depth under unimodal spectra, with bimodal spectra showing milder statistics. Additionally, ocean systems with mixed energy distribution and larger intermodal distance are less prone to extreme waves in bimodal spectra.
