Carriers of Sargassum and mechanism for coastal inundation in the Caribbean Sea

F. Andrade-Canto et al.

Summary: The effective carriers of Sargassum in the Caribbean Sea are identified as mesoscale eddies with coherent boundaries, which can harbor finite-time attractors for networks of buoyant or inertial particles. The mechanism of coastal choking is attributed to thermal instability in the presence of bottom topography, as identified in a minimal model of surface-intensified Caribbean Sea eddies.

Do Eddies Connect the Tropical Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico?

F. Andrade-Canto et al.

Summary: Using geodesic eddy detection on altimetric data, we found that North Brazil Currents Rings (NBCRs) are unable to bypass the Lesser Antilles as coherent transport structures. Northwestward translating Lagrangian eddies were detected, but they typically experience filamentation and loss of coherence before reaching the Lesser Antilles.

Detection and tracking of mesoscale eddies in the Mediterranean Sea: A comparison between the Sea Level Anomaly and the Absolute Dynamic Topography fields

Cori Pegliasco et al.

Summary: This study compared Mediterranean Sea eddies detected and tracked using two altimetry products from 2000 to 2015. It was found that more individual eddies and trajectories are detected in the Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) data compared to the Absolute Dynamic Topography (ADT) data, with larger radius but lower Eddy Kinetic Energy. The spatial distribution of the mesoscale activity differs between the two data sets.

Eddies Connect the Tropical Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico

Minghai Huang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that mesoscale eddies from the western tropical Atlantic Ocean can influence the Loop Current system in the Gulf of Mexico, and freshwater from the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers may enter the Gulf of Mexico through these eddies, potentially impacting the stratification of the Gulf of Mexico.

Retention time and transport potential of eddies in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico

Fernando Jose Bello-Fuentes et al.

Summary: Eddies, as transient structures in the ocean, have a significant impact on mean ocean circulation by modifying the distribution of mass and properties. A study on mesoscale eddies in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico revealed their distinct retention time and mass transport capacity in specific regions.
