Gender Differences in Smoking Initiation and Cessation Associated with the Intergenerational Transfer of Smoking across Three Generations: The Nagahama Study

Sachiko Nakagawa et al.

Summary: Global tobacco policies have reduced overall and male smoking rates, but female smoking rates have remained unchanged. The effects of parental smoking on children have been studied, but with mixed results in terms of gender differences. This study investigated the effects of long-term smoking behavior in families over three generations to clarify gender differences.

Sociodemographic Patterns of Exclusive and Dual Combustible Tobacco and E-Cigarette Use among US Adolescents-A Nationally Representative Study (2017-2020)

Bukola Usidame et al.

Summary: This study examined the sociodemographic predictors of exclusive and dual use of nicotine/tobacco products, particularly e-cigarettes and combustible tobacco, among adolescents. The results showed that eighth and tenth graders whose parents had higher education levels were less likely to engage in exclusive combustible and dual use. Monitoring the differential use of these products among adolescents from low socioeconomic status backgrounds or racial/ethnic minority households is important for informing interventions and policies.

Pre- and postnatal maternal smoking and offspring smoking trajectories: Evidence from a 20-year birth cohort

Nicholas Chadi et al.

Summary: The research found that exposure to maternal smoking, whether prenatal or postnatal, is associated with an increased risk of offspring smoking during adolescence. Adolescents with mothers who had decreasing, increasing, or persistent smoking were more likely to start smoking at an early age, while those with mothers who persisted in smoking had an increased risk of late-onset smoking. More research is needed to develop effective smoking cessation campaigns across preconception, prenatal, and postnatal periods to prevent the intergenerational transmission of smoking behaviors.

Modeling Parental Influence on Food Consumption among Chinese Adolescents through Self-Efficacy: A Path Analysis

Jialin Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that perceived parental control, parental modeling, and parent-teen co-decision making significantly influence the fruit and vegetable consumption and junk food consumption of Chinese adolescents, with self-efficacy playing a mediating role. Improving adolescents' self-efficacy can be an effective strategy to enhance the nutritional quality of their diets.

Parents, Peers, and Trajectories of Cigarette Smoking: A Group-Based Approach

Matt Bradshaw et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationships between parent and peer role models and longitudinal smoking patterns from adolescence to early adulthood. Results from the analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health demonstrate that both parent and peer smoking behaviors are independently associated with smoking trajectories, with their combined effects being particularly powerful.
