Aromatic compounds releases aroused by sediment resuspension alter nitrate transformation rates and pathways during aerobic-anoxic transition

Xiaoyan Liu et al.

Summary: Aromatic compounds released by sediment resuspension can accelerate nitrate-N transformation, with methylbenzene having a more significant impact compared to aniline and nitrobenzene. Microbial analysis revealed changes in microbial cooccurrence networks and associations among bacteria due to sediment resuspension, with dominant bacteria abundance varying with different ACs releases. Analysis also showed that ACs distributed in suspended sediment indirectly affected nitrate-N transformation rates and pathways through altering bacteria abundance and electron transport system activity.

The impact of carbon to nitrogen ratios and pH on the microbial prevalence and polyhydroxybutyrate production levels using a mixed microbial starter culture

Wen Zhou et al.

Summary: This study identified the relationship between growth conditions (C/N ratios and pH) and key-microbes during PHB accumulation, showing that Thauera was the most prevalent species in MMCs at pH 9. The results demonstrate the impact of C/N ratios and pH on microbial prevalence and PHB production levels, providing insights for regulating high PHB production within MMCs.

Denitrification kinetics indicates nitrous oxide uptake is unaffected by electron competition in Accumulibacter

Samarpita Roy et al.

Summary: Denitrifying phosphorus removal is an energy-efficient treatment technology that relies on microorganisms like Accumulibacter utilizing nitrate or nitrite, but lack of complete denitrification pathways may lead to accumulation of harmful intermediates like nitrous oxide. Genomic analyses suggest that the denitrification abilities of Accumulibacter vary based on lineage. Accumulibacter did not accumulate N2O in the presence of multiple electron acceptors, and denitrification kinetics were not limited by electron competition.

An NADH preferring acetoacetyl-CoA reductase is engaged in poly-3-hydroxybutyrate accumulation in Escherichia coli

Karel Olavarria et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the possibility of producing PHB as a fermentation product in E. coli with higher efficiency. The importance of an acetoacetyl-CoA reductase with a preference for NADH in PHB production is highlighted through structural and kinetic analyses. The assembly of an operon combining phaCA genes with the gene encoding the NADH-preferring acetoacetyl-CoA reductase results in continuous accumulation of PHB in E. coli cells under oxygen limiting conditions, indicating opportunities for further protein/metabolic engineering strategies.

Dissolved oxygen disturbs nitrate transformation by modifying microbial community, co-occurrence networks, and functional genes during aerobic-anoxic transition

Xiaoyan Liu et al.

Summary: There is no consensus among researchers on the impact of dissolved oxygen (DO) on nitrate (NO3--N) transformation and microbial community during aerobic-anoxic transition. Changes in DO significantly influence NO3--N transformation rate and microbial diversity, with higher DO levels accelerating the process.

Characteristics of microbial denitrification under different aeration intensities: Performance, mechanism, and co-occurrence network

Haiguang Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of dissolved oxygen on the characteristics and mechanisms of denitrification in mixed bacterial consortia. The results showed that optimal aeration intensity and inter-genus cooperation were crucial for maximizing denitrification efficiency. Additionally, intra-genus syntrophy within specific bacteria played a significant role in achieving high total nitrogen removal efficiency.

Intra/extracellular electron transfer for aerobic denitrification mediated by in-situ biosynthesis palladium nanoparticles

Yating Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanisms of nanoparticles in aerobic denitrification for the first time, revealing that bio-Pd(0) can promote the removal of both nitrate and nitrite by accelerating electron transfer rate and improving affinity. It also provided insights into the electron transfer mechanisms in Gram-positive bacteria.
