Efrat Miller et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the bacterial aerobic biodegradation of reduced carbon-contaminants (RCC) in a pilot system using a tailored permeable reactive biobarrier (PRBB) with macro-capsules incorporating a built-in nutrient core to support bacterial growth. The findings demonstrate the efficient degradation of the RCC model compound and the environmental advantage of controlling excess nutrient release.

Application oriented bioaugmentation processes: Mechanism, performance improvement and scale-up

Huilin Ma et al.

Summary: Bioaugmentation is a promising optimization method that introduces specific strains into biological treatment systems to improve treatment efficiency. This study comprehensively reviews the mechanisms of bioaugmentation, including microbial community structure, optimization methods, and feasible approaches for scale-up applications. It also examines the different contributions of indigenous and exogenous strains, the relationship between microbial community variation and system performance, and effective methods to address potential bioaugmentation failures. The study proposes gradual expansion from lab-scale to full-scale applications, combining direct dosing and biofilm techniques, and implementing side-stream reactors. Lastly, it outlines future challenges and prospects in the field.

Pyrite-activated persulfate oxidation and biological denitrification for effluent of biological landfill leachate treatment system

Siying Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that pyrite-activated persulfate oxidation efficiently removed organic matter from the effluent of a biological landfill leachate treatment system, and subsequent denitrification was also successful. With the optimal parameters, a COD removal efficiency of about 45% and a nitrate removal rate of around 108 mg L-1 d(-1) were achieved.
