Infant urinary metabolomic profile in a fatal acute methadone intoxication

Alberto Chighine et al.

Summary: This case report discusses a suspicious case of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Pathological findings indicated acute respiratory failure, and toxicological analysis revealed elevated levels of methadone in the blood. Using a metabolomic approach, the urinary sample collected at autopsy was compared to profiles from newborns who experienced perinatal asphyxia and healthy control newborns. Interestingly, the metabolomic profile of the methadone-intoxicated infant was similar to those with perinatal asphyxia, particularly those with the worst outcomes. This is the first report to utilize a metabolomic approach in a pathological case, providing valuable additional information on the cause and mechanism of death.

The Importance of BHB Testing on the Post-Mortem Diagnosis of Ketoacidosis

Stina Ahlstrom et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) analysis on different causes of death. The results indicate that BHB analysis is instrumental in detecting alcoholic ketoacidosis and acidosis, but does not change the diagnosis of diabetes ketoacidosis and hypothermia.

Postmortem Metabolomics Reveal Acylcarnitines as Potential Biomarkers for Fatal Oxycodone-Related Intoxication

Albert Elmsjo et al.

Summary: Postmortem metabolomics is a potential tool for discovering new biomarkers in death investigations. This study used postmortem metabolomics to identify potential biomarkers that differentiate between oxycodone intoxications and non-intoxications. The results showed that oxycodone intoxications had significantly lower levels of acylcarnitines compared to controls, indicating a potential biological biomarker for opioid poisonings.

Postmortem forensic toxicology cases: A retrospective review from Milan, Italy

Domenico Di Candia et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed interpretation of toxicological results from 136 cases analyzed by the Bureau of Legal Medicine at the University of Milan. The majority of cases (74.3%) showed positive results, with cocaine, diazepam, morphine, and ethanol being the main substances detected. Specific profiles of individuals who died from acute intoxication or other causes were identified. The importance of toxicological data in forensic sciences is confirmed by this study.

Targeted metabolomics analysis of amino acids and acylcarnitines as risk markers for diabetes by LC-MS/MS technique

Shaghayegh Hosseinkhani et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the association between the levels of amino acids and acylcarnitines and diabetes in order to develop predictive models. The results showed that some amino acids and acylcarnitines were positively associated with diabetes, while others showed a reverse trend. These findings provide insights into the disturbances in metabolic pathways among the diabetic population and can be targeted for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes.

Metabolomic markers of glucose regulation after a lifestyle intervention in prediabetes

Magdalena Del Rocio Sevilla-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify metabolomic markers of regression to normoglycemia in individuals with prediabetes. The results show that specific metabolites are significantly associated with regression to normoglycemia, independent of HbA1c and weight loss. The metabolomic perturbations due to lifestyle intervention display enrichment of taurine and hypotaurine metabolism pathway.
