Yaraviridae: a proposed new family of viruses infecting Acanthamoeba castellanii

Paulo Victor de Miranda Boratto et al.

Summary: A proposal is made to create a new family Yaraviridae, a new species Yaravirus brasiliense, and a new viral genus Yaravirus for the classification of a virus infecting Acanthamoeba castellanii cells. This proposal is based on the significant differences observed in the features of this virus compared to other amoebae viruses, as well as the potential discovery of related viruses in the future. These viruses are to be included in the existing realm Varidnaviria and the kingdom Bamfordvirae, due to the presence of a major capsid protein with a double jelly-roll fold.

Advanced biotechnology using methyltransferase and its applications in bacteria: a mini review

Jun Ren et al.

Summary: The prokaryotic restriction-modification (RM) system protects the host by cleaving foreign DNA, making it difficult to introduce engineered plasmid DNAs into newly isolated microorganisms. Methyltransferases can be utilized to methylate engineered plasmid DNAs before transformation, enhancing stability within cells. Study on methyltransferases in newly isolated bacteria is essential for genetic engineering.

Systematic evaluation of horizontal gene transfer between eukaryotes and viruses

Nicholas A. T. Irwin et al.

Summary: This study systematically characterized viral-eukaryotic gene exchange, identifying thousands of transfers and revealing their frequency, taxonomic distribution, and predicted functions. The findings highlight the impact of virus-host interactions on evolutionary changes, as well as common strategies employed by viruses to manipulate hosts, such as metabolic reprogramming, proteolytic degradation, and extracellular modification. Additionally, the study implicates genetic exchange in the early evolution and diversification of eukaryotes, particularly through viral-derived glycosyltransferases impacting a wide range of structures.

The Astounding World of Glycans from Giant Viruses

Immacolata Speciale et al.

Summary: Viruses are a diverse group of entities that require a suitable host for replication. Recently discovered large and giant viruses have their own glycosylation pathway, different from the traditional paradigm where viral glycans mimic those of the host. This review focuses on large and giant viruses that produce carbohydrate-processing enzymes and discusses achievements in elucidating glycan structures, manipulating sugars, and organic synthesis of virus-encoded glycans.

Giant virus biology and diversity in the era of genome-resolved metagenomics

Frederik Schulz et al.

Summary: The discovery of giant viruses with similar characteristics as bacteria and cellular organisms has been a significant breakthrough in biology. Previously, our knowledge of giant viruses was limited to a small number of species-level isolates obtained through laboratory-based co-cultivation. However, advances in sequencing technologies and bioinformatics have expanded our understanding of giant viruses, their diversity, and their impact on global nutrient cycles.

The structure of a virus-encoded nucleosome

Marco Igor Valencia-Sanchez et al.

Summary: The cryo-EM structure of DNA-assembled histone pairs from Marseillevirus, a nucleocytoplasmic large DNA virus, reveals that they form viral nucleosomes with highly conserved features similar to canonical eukaryotic nucleosomes. Viral histones from Marseillevirus form 'forced' heterodimers that assemble into tetramers, which in turn assemble DNA to form structures virtually identical to canonical eukaryotic nucleosomes.

Virus-encoded histone doublets are essential and form nucleosome-like structures

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Recent studies have challenged the traditional view of nucleosome organization in eukaryotes by identifying minimalist histones in archaea and discovering genes encoding remote homologs of eukaryotic histones in giant viruses. The presence of viral doublet histones, essential for viral infectivity, suggests a specialized function of histones in the biology of these unusual viruses. Cryo-EM structures of viral nucleosome-like particles show similarities to eukaryotic nucleosomes despite limited sequence identity, further expanding the range of organisms that require nucleosomes.
