Liver expression of IL-22, IL-22R1 and IL-22BP in patients with chronic hepatitis C with different fibrosis stages

Rodrigo Jose Videres Cordeiro de Brito et al.

Summary: IL-22, IL-22R1, and IL-22BP may play important roles in the mechanisms of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C. IL-22-producing cells are more abundant in the early stages of liver fibrosis, while the immunostaining of IL-22R1 decreases as liver fibrosis progresses. IL-22BP-producing cells are higher in patients with cirrhosis.

Th22 cells are efficiently recruited in the gut by CCL28 as an alternative to CCL20 but do not compensate for the loss of Th17 cells in treated HIV-1-infected individuals

Manon Nayrac et al.

Summary: In individuals infected with HIV-1 and receiving antiretroviral therapy, gut Th22 cells are better restored compared to Th17 cells, potentially due to their mechanism of reducing CCL20 production in enterocytes through IL-22 and IL-18. When the ratio of CCL20/CCL28 decreases, Th22 cells can migrate via the CCR10-CCL28 axis as an alternative pathway.

Th22 response induced by Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains is closely related to severity of pulmonary lesions and bacillary load in patients with multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis

B. R. Imperiale et al.

Summary: This study investigated the Th22 response in TB patients and healthy donors, finding lower IL-22 levels in TB patients compared to healthy donors and enhanced Th22 response in patients infected with Mtb strains, especially drug-susceptible ones. In MDR-TB patients, a weaker Th22 response was associated with higher sputum bacillary load and bilateral lung lesions, and a higher percentage of IL-22(+) cells was linked to lower proportion of PD-1(+) or CD57(+) T cells. Moreover, senescent T cells were more prominent in patients with severe lung lesions and high bacillary load, affecting the Th22 response.

IL-26 promotes the pathogenesis of malignant pleural effusion by enhancing CD4+IL-22+ T-cell differentiation and inhibiting CD8+ T-cell cytotoxicity

Yiran Niu et al.

Summary: IL-26 is a newly discovered member of the IL-10 cytokine family mainly secreted by Th17 cells, and its involvement in malignant pleural effusion (MPE) production and promotion has been reported for the first time in this study. Elevated levels of IL-26, IL-10, and IL-6 were observed in MPE compared to peripheral blood, with the primary cell source of IL-26 being Th17 cells. Additionally, IL-26 was found to impact the proportions of CD4(+) T cells and CD8(+) T cells, influencing their tumor-killing activity and patient survival.

Vitamin D Inhibits IL-22 Production Through a Repressive Vitamin D Response Element in the il22 Promoter

Daniel V. Lopez et al.

Summary: Th22 cells are a CD4(+) T cell subset that produces interleukin (IL)-22 and primarily acts on epithelial cells, affecting keratinocyte proliferation, differentiation, and maturation. The regulation of IL-22 production in human T cells involves the transcription factors AhR and ROR gamma t, as well as the active form of vitamin D-3. The inhibition of IL-22 production by 1,25(OH)(2)D-3 through VDR and VDRE has been identified as a key mechanism.
