Genotypic and phylogenic analyses of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Al Ahsa, Eastern Saudi Arabia during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: First cases of Leishmania tropica with the predominance of Leishmania major

Summary: During the lockdown period, there was an increase in sandflies and cutaneous leishmaniasis cases in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. A molecular study found that Leishmania major was the predominant species, but Leishmania tropica was also identified. Microscopy had low sensitivity but high specificity. Patient characteristics such as gender, residence, and treatment outcome were associated with the occurrence and genotype of Leishmania.

Distribution and epidemiological features of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Asir province, Saudi Arabia, from 2011 to 2020

Summary: This study is the first large-scale investigation into the seasonality, spatial distribution, and demographics of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Asir province. It reveals that Saudi male citizens and children under 13 years old are at higher risk of CL infection, with most cases reported in the face during winter and autumn seasons. Geographically, the governates of Abha, Sarat-Abidah, and Khamis-Mushait have the highest prevalence of CL, with a noted geographical expansion of CL over the past ten years.

The proximity of human settlements to rodent reservoir hosts resulted in the mixed transmission of both Leishmania species. The Impact of Illegal Waste Sites on the Transmission of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Central Tunisia

Summary: Illegal waste disposal sites have become critical habitats for sandflies carrying ZCL, with higher densities of Phlebotoms papatasi compared to natural environments, increasing the risk of spreading the disease to nearby communities. Proper waste management should be integrated into control programs in endemic countries to prevent ZCL transmission.
