The diffusion of energy technologies. Evidence from renewable, fossil, and nuclear energy patents

Ana Maria Fernandez et al.

Summary: Technology innovation is crucial in addressing climate change and achieving energy policy objectives. This paper provides a descriptive analysis of innovation in energy technology across countries and sectors, and explores the factors influencing the diffusion of energy technology patents. The results indicate that patents citing more scientific literature and previous patents have greater diffusion. Co-ownership of patents with universities has a negative impact on the diffusion of other energy technologies. These findings have important policy implications for enhancing scientific knowledge incorporation and co-inventorship in energy innovation.
