Durable flexible dual-layer and free-standing silicon/carbon composite anode for lithium-ion batteries

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a flexible silicon/carbon composite with dual-layer was prepared by microelectronic printing technology and used as an anode for lithium-ion batteries. The composite material has a slit structure that provides elastic space to buffer volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation, and an amorphous carbon protective shell improves the structural stability and electrochemical performance. The experimental results show that the flexible anode exhibits high reversible capacity and good cyclic stability.

Influence of external on silicon electrodes in lithium-ion cells

Mara Goettlinger et al.

Summary: The influence of external pressure on lithium-ion cells with a silicon anode is investigated. The main failure mechanism is found to be a continuous irreversible consumption of lithium ions, likely due to repeated solid electrolyte interphase breakage and reformation. Higher pressure leads to a greater impact on lithium depletion, which is mitigated by internal relithiation of the positive electrode using a lithium reservoir, allowing for 1000 cycles without capacity fading at high capacity.

Volume and thickness change of NMC811|SiOx-graphite large-format lithium-ion cells: from pouch cell to active material level

Hendrik Pegel et al.

Summary: In this study, the reversible thickness change and expansion of a large lithium-ion automotive pouch cell were investigated using an actively controlled pneumatic cell press. The contributions of the NMC811 cathode and SiOx -graphite composite anode to the expansion were resolved and validated. The results show that the Ni-rich cathodes have a significant impact on the cell expansion and exhibit nonlinear thickness change. The capacities of SiOx and graphite were determined and their volume expansion as a function of the anode state of charge was calculated. The correlation between the volume expansion of the active materials and the thickness change of the SiOx-Gr composite anode was investigated.

Stress evolution and thickness change of a lithium-ion pouch cell under various cycling conditions

Congrui Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of a single pouch cell during charge/discharge cycles by measuring stress and thickness changes. The results show that increasing the charge/discharge current generally decreases the stress increase percentage and increases the volume expansion percentage. Additionally, increasing the upper cutoff voltage generally increases the stress increase percentage and volume expansion percentage. These findings provide important insights for the design of battery packs.

Electrochemically Stable In Situ Dilatometry of NMC, NCA and Graphite Electrodes for Lithium-Ion Cells Compared to XRD Measurements

Franz B. Spingler et al.

Summary: In this study, the thickness changes of electrodes during cycling were investigated using a dilatometry setup. The research found that electrode expansion does not necessarily correlate with the unit cell volume changes of its active materials in any meaningful way, and only by measuring the expansion of the full electrode can we fully understand and predict its behavior during cycling. The reliability of the dilation measurement and the electrochemical performance of the dilatometry setup were thoroughly validated and significantly exceeded those of related studies published in recent years.
