Thermal runaway evaluation and thermal performance enhancement of a lithium-ion battery coupling cooling system and battery sub-models

Antonio Garcia et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel simulation approach for Lithium-Ion battery simulations, combining fundamental and applicate aspects. The results demonstrate that aged cells are more prone to thermal runaway, but the difference can be reduced by increasing cooling flow. Overall, the proposed framework proves its capability in addressing relevant phenomena during battery operation and improving the design phase from cell to pack.

An electrochemical-thermal coupling model for heat generation analysis of prismatic lithium battery

Honglei Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, an electrochemical thermal coupling model was established to simulate the discharge process of a prismatic lithium battery. The study found that the heat generation distribution in the porous electrodes was non-uniform and the negative electrode played a dominant role in the porous area. Furthermore, the relationship between total heat generation, discharge time, and discharge rate was proposed.

Combined State of Charge and State of Energy Estimation of Lithium-Ion Battery Using Dual Forgetting Factor-Based Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter for Electric Vehicle Applications

Prashant Shrivastava et al.

Summary: A new dual forgetting factor-based adaptive extended Kalman filter (DFFAEKF) is proposed for State of Charge (SOC) estimation, combined with a simple State of Energy (SOE) estimation approach to develop a combined SOC and SOE estimation method. Experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately estimate battery states under dynamic operating conditions and converge quickly to true values under erroneous initial conditions. It also has a complexity order equivalent to DEKF and helps reduce the computational burden on processors in BMSs for EV applications.

Novel method for the parameterization of a reliable equivalent circuit model for the precise simulation of a battery cell's electric behavior

Maximilian Bruch et al.

Summary: A new method for precise parameterization of an equivalent circuit model from pulse tests is presented, with the robustness of such models increased by limiting the voltage of the RC element with the highest time constant. As a result, a precise and reliable model of a lithium-ion battery cell is created, with only a minor root-mean-square error of 1.30%.
