Placental colonization by Fusobacterium nucleatum is mediated by binding of the Fap2 lectin to placentally displayed Gal-GalNAc

Lishay Parhi et al.

Summary: This study suggests that Fusobacterium nucleatum, an oral bacterium associated with preterm birth, binds to the placenta by recognizing Gal-GalNAc on trophoblasts. The binding is reduced with O-glycanase treatment or soluble Gal-GalNAc. In a mouse model, Fap2-expressing F. nucleatum reduces fetal survival, indicating a potential role in adverse pregnancy outcomes.

PD-L1 Up-Regulation in Prostate Cancer Cells by Porphyromonas gingivalis

Sabine Groeger et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between chronic inflammation and prostate cancer. The study found a link between periodontitis and prostate cancer, and revealed the mechanism of tumor-induced immune evasion associated with bacterial infection in the tumor environment.

Fusobacterium nucleatum induces proliferation and migration in pancreatic cancer cells through host autocrine and paracrine signaling

Barath Udayasuryan et al.

Summary: Infection with Fusobacterium can induce normal pancreatic epithelial cells and PDAC cells to secrete increased amounts of cytokines, promoting proliferation, migration, and invasive cell motility in PDAC cells. This phenomenon is associated with tumor progression.

Periodontal Pathogens Promote Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma by Regulating ATR and NLRP3 Inflammasome

Yufei Yao et al.

Summary: Periodontitis is closely related to oral cancer, with periodontal pathogens potentially promoting tumor growth and proliferation. In vivo and in vitro studies showed that periodontitis-associated bacteria can significantly increase cell proliferation and S phase cells, as well as induce alveolar bone resorption in mice models with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Furthermore, the expression of inflammatory cytokines and downstream signaling molecules were upregulated in tumor tissues of the P+ group, suggesting a potential new molecular mechanism between periodontitis-related bacteria and OSCC.

Oral health's inextricable connection to systemic health: Special populations bring to bear multimodal relationships and factors connecting periodontal disease to systemic diseases and conditions

Yvonne L. Kapila

Summary: The landscape of dentistry is changing, with emerging studies showing the intricate connection between oral and systemic health. Various factors such as pathogens, genetics, environmental influences, and immune responses play a role in shaping the development of oral and systemic health. Special populations highlight the importance of understanding the multimodal relationships between oral and systemic health in different groups of individuals.
