Biocontrol Potential of Essential Oils in Organic Horticulture Systems: From Farm to Fork

Yuru Chang et al.

Summary: In recent decades, there has been increasing attention to food safety and organic horticulture, leading to a demand for natural products to manage plant diseases, pests, and weeds. Essential oils (EOs) or EO-based products have emerged as potential biocontrol agents due to their safety, bioactivity, biodegradability, ecological compatibility, and economic viability. However, the application of EOs has been limited by a lack of thorough analysis of scientific evidence on their efficacy, range, and mechanism of action.

Diversity of limestone bacteriophages infecting Dickeya solani isolated in the Czech Republic

Karel Petrzik et al.

Summary: Seven novel tailed lytic viruses infecting Dickeya solani were discovered in the Czech Republic, with genomes similar to Dickeya virus LIMEstone 1. Except for one virus, they should all be considered strains of the same species. The differences in sequences are mainly due to the presence or absence of homing endonuclease genes.

The future of phage biocontrol in integrated plant protection for sustainable crop production

Dominique Holtappels et al.

Summary: Bacterial phytopathogens pose a threat to crop yields, with bacteriophages being investigated as potential biocontrol agents. Understanding the biology of pathogens is crucial for developing targeted strategies, and utilizing Internet of Things technology for treatment may be cost-efficient and timely. These prospects are considered within the regulatory framework of virus-oriented integrated pest control.

Pathogenicity and Relative Abundance of Dickeya and Pectobacterium Species in Switzerland: An Epidemiological Dichotomy

Patrice de Werra et al.

Summary: Pectobacterium and Dickeya species are causal agents of blackleg and soft rot diseases in potatoes. P. brasiliense has shown a drastic increase in abundance in most European countries in the past decade, despite not necessarily being the most virulent. Pathogenicity alone does not explain the prevalence of certain species in Swiss potato fields.

Complete genome sequences of novel Berlinvirus and novel Certrevirus lytic for Pectobacterium sp. causing soft rot and black leg disease of potato

Karel Petrzik et al.

Summary: Two novel dsDNA bacteriophages, PcCB251 and PcCB7V, targeting the plant pathogen Pectobacterium parmentieri have been isolated and sequenced. PcCB251 belongs to genus Berlinvirus, family Autographiviridae, while PcCB7V is classified in genus Certrevirus, subfamily Vequintavirinae. Both phages have narrow host ranges and can potentially be used for phage-based control of pectolytic bacteria causing soft rot disease of potato.

Use of a Specific Phage Cocktail for Soft Rot Control on Ware Potatoes: A Case Study

Eugenia N. Bugaeva et al.

Summary: Using bacteriophages to control pathogenic bacteria in horticulture shows promise, but requires adherence to technological and environmental constraints. This study focused on selecting phages to create a cocktail effective against potato soft rot pathogens, resulting in complete lysis of circulating bacterial strains in vitro. Application via a humidity maintenance system reduced Pectobacterium spp. population below symptomatic threshold, indicating potential for off-season storage treatment.
