Impact of the aquatic pathobiome in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) quest for safe water and sanitation practices

Elisa Taviani et al.

Summary: Microbial contamination of surface waters is a significant issue for low-income and middle-income countries, where surface waters are often the only available source for drinking and domestic use. Recent urbanization, demographic shifts, and climate events have hindered access to safe drinking water and sanitation practices in these countries. Limited research exists on the composition of pathogenic organisms in urban and periurban water, particularly in rapidly changing environments in sub-Saharan Africa. Large-scale water pathobiome studies can play a crucial role in addressing the challenges faced by these countries in achieving global access to safe water and sanitation.

Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Characteristics of the Intestinal Microorganisms in Middle-Aged and Elderly Patients: Effects of Smoking

Hai-Tao Yang et al.

Summary: Smoking is significantly associated with the structure of intestinal flora in middle-aged and elderly populations. Current smokers have lower levels of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and higher levels of negative bacteria such as Burkholderia, Sutterella, and Megamonas.

Environmental factors shaping the gut microbiome in a Dutch population

R. Gacesa et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the gut microbiome of 8,208 individuals from the Netherlands and found that the microbiome is primarily shaped by the environment and cohabitation. Only about 6.6% of microbial taxa are heritable, while around 48.6% of taxa are significantly influenced by cohabitation. Additionally, the study identified numerous associations between the microbiome and health, diet, socioeconomic factors, and early-life and current exposome.

Prediction of Prophages and Their Host Ranges in Pathogenic and Commensal Neisseria Species

Giulia Orazi et al.

Summary: The study identifies a large number of candidate phages in Neisseria species, including both commensal and pathogenic ones, and reveals extensive interspecies targeting of these phages by Neisseria CRISPR-Cas systems. This research provides important insights into the diversity and host range of phages and their influence on microbial evolution.

Summary: The study reveals a pronounced trade-off between the number of species and their effective connectance in human-associated microbial communities and sponge-associated microbial communities, indicating that natural microbiomes are shaped by stability constraints, which limit their complexity.

Comparison Of The Gut Microbiota In Different Age Groups In China

Hang Yan et al.

Summary: Aging is the most profound risk factor for most non-communicable diseases. Probiotics have been found to play a specific role in fighting aging. Changes in gut microbiota are associated with aging, and there are differences in gut microbiota composition and metabolic pathways between older and younger individuals, which may be related to immune status and inflammation.

Antimicrobial resistance among GLASS priority pathogens from Pakistan: 2006-2018

Dania Khalid Saeed et al.

Summary: The study conducted a situational analysis of antimicrobial resistance rates in Pakistan aligned with the Global Antimicrobial Surveillance System (GLASS). The results showed high rates of resistance, particularly amongst certain organisms to specific antimicrobials. Antibiograms were found to be a valuable tool in capturing the evolution of resistance over time and could supplement national AMR surveillance efforts in areas where national surveillance may be limited.

Endotoxemia is associated with an adverse metabolic profile

Anne-Mari Maatta et al.

Summary: The study found that endotoxemia is directly associated with concentrations of various lipoproteins, fatty acids, glycoprotein acetyls, amino acids, and glucose, while inversely associated with parameters like HDL. These associations were stronger in smokers and individuals with high BMI, but did not differ significantly between participants with different CHD status.

Antibiotic resistance in Pakistan: a systematic review of past decade

Hazrat Bilal et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the antibiotic resistance scenario in Pakistan over the past 10 years and found high resistance of pathogens to commonly used antibiotics, as well as gaps in surveillance practices and methodological data. Recommendations were made to strengthen surveillance practices and take precise actions to combat antimicrobial resistance in the region.

Gut microbiota markers associated with obesity and overweight in Italian adults

Vanessa Palmas et al.

Summary: This study characterized the gut microbiota of overweight/obese patients and normal-weight controls of Sardinian origin, identifying differences and associations with obesity-related factors. The results showed a decrease in Bacteroidetes taxa and an increase in Firmicutes taxa in obese patients, indicating a potential link between microbiota composition and obesity. Additionally, an increase in bacterial taxa with endotoxic activity was observed in obese patients compared to normal-weight controls.

Summary: Gut microbiomes play significant roles in human health and are affected by various factors. The impact of exercise on gut microbiomes is not well studied, and there are differences in gut microbiomes between Chinese and Pakistani participants. Overall microbial diversity and structure differed between the two nationalities, as did the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among certain bacterial species.
