All-In-One: Microbial Response to Natural and Anthropogenic Forcings in a Coastal Mediterranean Ecosystem, the Syracuse Bay (Ionian Sea, Italy)

Gabriella Caruso et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of bacterial and phytoplankton communities to environmental and human-induced perturbations in Syracuse Bay, a Mediterranean coastal ecosystem. The availability of organic substrates is found to be a key factor driving the distribution and activity of microbial communities. Seasonal variations significantly affect the abundance and metabolic activities of microbial communities, and organic matter inputs from agriculture or aquaculture activities further stimulate microbial response.

Allometric releases of nitrogen and phosphorus from sediments mediated by bacteria determines water eutrophication in coastal river basins of Bohai Bay

Jiayuan Liu et al.

Summary: Despite efforts by the Chinese government to reduce land-based pollutant discharge, eutrophication remains a common problem in rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters. This study investigates the mechanisms of eutrophication in the Duliujian River Basin of Bohai Bay. The results suggest that sediment is a major source of nitrogen and phosphorus, and controlling both nutrients is necessary to control water eutrophication in coastal river basins.

Verification of an Environmental Impact Assessment Using a Multivariate Statistical Model

Wei-Rung Chou et al.

Summary: Environmental impact assessment is important for preventing and mitigating adverse effects of economic development on the natural environment. This study used principal component analysis and structural equation modeling to identify the major factors influencing coastal waters in southern Taiwan. The findings revealed that river input, suspended matter, and seasonal changes were the primary factors affecting the coastal area. The assessment also showed direct and indirect effects of abiotic factors on phytoplankton and zooplankton density and diversity.

Effect of river plume on phytoplankton community structure in Zhujiang River estuary

Zhong Qi et al.

Summary: The research in the Zhujiang River estuary revealed that phytoplankton communities were mainly composed of diatoms and dinoflagellates, with chain-forming diatoms as the dominant species. Salinity and dissolved inorganic nitrogen played a crucial role in shaping species composition, with high similarity observed in species distribution in low-salinity diluted waters. Additionally, phytoplankton displayed diel vertical cycles, with peak abundance occurring at 2:00 am, mainly contributed by diatom species and T. nitzschioides.

Patterns of phytoplankton community structure and diversity in aquaculture ponds, Henan, China

Man Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that factors such as water temperature, dissolved organic carbon, alkalinity, and nitrate have a significant impact on phytoplankton species composition. Variables like cultivated animals and conductivity also play important roles in phytoplankton diversity. Maintaining a low-density phytoplankton population is crucial for preserving high phytoplankton diversity and water stability in aquaculture ponds.

Seasonal Variations of Dissolved Organic Matter by Fluorescent Analysis in a Typical River Catchment in Northern China

Zenglei Han et al.

Summary: Fluorescence spectroscopy and PARAFAC modeling were used to study the sources, distribution, and transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Duliujian River catchment, identifying four main fluorescent components. Results showed higher dissolved organic carbon and chromophoric dissolved organic matter in summer compared to other seasons, suggesting a significant impact of rainfall events on the input of terrestrial-derived DOM.

Impact of the Water-Sediment Regulation Scheme on the phytoplankton community in the Yellow River estuary

Jingjing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the Water-Sediment Regulation Scheme promoted phytoplankton growth in estuarine areas, but decreased phytoplankton abundance in the entire study area. It also led to a decrease in phytoplankton biodiversity and an increase in abundance of specific species like Synedra sp. Moreover, the scheme resulted in a temporary rapid increase in zooplankton abundance and biomass.

Phytoplankton Morpho-Functional Trait Variability along Coastal Environmental Gradients

Sirpa Lehtinen et al.

Summary: The study found that temperature had a significant impact on phytoplankton traits, with nitrogen-fixing, buoyant, non-motile, and autotrophic phytoplankton as well as harmful cyanobacteria benefitting from higher temperatures. Water transparency showed a negative relation to the studied traits, while nutrient loading source type did not have any relation to the traits.

Phytoplankton community response to nutrients along lake salinity and altitude gradients on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Zhaoxi Li et al.

Summary: The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the highest and largest plateau in the world, has unique phytoplankton species that are highly sensitive to environmental changes. Research findings indicate that salinity is a critical controlling factor for all phytoplankton communities, and altitude is an important driver for variation in phytoplankton size and response to nutrients.
