Age-sex differences in the global burden of lower respiratory infections and risk factors, 1990-2019: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Hmwe Hmwe Kyu et al.

Summary: This study examined the global burden of lower respiratory infections (LRIs) and related risk factors in children older than 5 years and adults. The study found variations in the incidence and mortality rates of LRIs across different age groups and genders. Targeted interventions have been successful in reducing the burden of LRIs in children, and similar interventions for other age groups could contribute to the achievement of multiple Sustainable Development Goals.

Global Trends in the Proportion of Macrolide-Resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infections A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Kyunghoon Kim et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the global patterns of macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MRMP) infections, revealing regional differences in the proportion of MRMP infections. The Western Pacific region has the highest proportion of MRMP infections, followed by the South East Asian region, the region of the Americas, and the European region. The most commonly identified variant of MRMP infection is A2063G, followed by A2064G. The proportion of MRMP infections varies among studies including only children, only adults, or both children and adults.

Q Fever as a Cause of Community-Acquired Pneumonia in French Guiana

Loic Epelboin et al.

Summary: In French Guiana, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is primarily caused by Coxiella burnetii infection. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Q fever pneumonia and identify new clinical characteristics and risk factors. A retrospective case-control study was conducted on CAP patients admitted to Cayenne Hospital between 2009 and 2012. The study found that Q fever accounted for 38.5% of CAP cases, the highest prevalence reported worldwide. Living in Cayenne area, being aged 30-60 years, CRP > 185 mg/L, and leukocyte count < 10 G/L were identified as independent risk factors for Q fever.

Mathias W. Pletz et al.

Summary: Despite advances in CAP research, there are still many unmet needs. CAPNETZ identified eleven topics for future CAP research, including detection of causative pathogens, next generation sequencing for antimicrobial treatment guidance, imaging diagnostics, biomarkers, risk stratification, antiviral and antibiotic treatment, adjunctive therapy, vaccines and prevention, systemic and local immune response, comorbidities, and long-term cardio-vascular complications.

Legionellosis Caused by Non-Legionella pneumophila Species, with a Focus on Legionella longbeachae

Stephen T. Chambers et al.

Summary: Although Legionella pneumophila is commonly known to cause community-acquired pneumonia and Pontiac fever, infections caused by other Legionella species are often underestimated globally. L. longbeachae has been identified as a major cause of community-acquired pneumonia in Australia and New Zealand, particularly linked to exposure to potting soils and compost. Genetic studies have shown that Legionella has highly adaptable genomes, which contributes to its pathogenesis and survival strategies. Efforts to prevent legionellosis are hindered by surveillance limitations and variable effectiveness of current prevention strategies.

Summary: The benefit of empiric coverage for atypical bacteria in community-acquired pneumonia is controversial. A meta-analysis found that empiric atypical coverage can decrease the clinical failure rate of CAP associated with Legionella spp. and M. pneumoniae, but not with C. pneumoniae.

Summary: This study compared the clinical characteristics of patients with severe and less severe forms of Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia, finding that severe patients were more likely to develop dyspnea and exhibit multi-lobar pneumonia. Abnormal levels of CK and BNP were identified as risk factors associated with severe C. psittaci pneumonia.
