Summary: Listeria monocytogenes populations are widespread and diverse in the waters and sediments of the Central California Coast agricultural region, with most strains containing intact virulence genes. The prevalence of L. monocytogenes is higher in winter and spring, as well as after rain events. Different sequence types and clonal complexes were identified. The findings of this survey are important for understanding the distribution of L. monocytogenes in agricultural and natural regions.

Characterization of a Novel Group of Listeria Phages That Target Serotype 4b Listeria monocytogenes

Summary: Listeria monocytogenes serotype 4b strains are commonly found in food processing environments and are often isolated in clinical settings. Bacteriophages, natural viral predators of bacteria, were studied for their ability to target and inhibit the growth of serotype 4b strains. Among 120 wild Listeria phages, nine were chosen for their lytic activity against a model serotype 4b strain, and they were divided into two groups based on their characteristics. Further studies on these phages showed inhibitory effects on the growth of serotype 4b strains, providing potential for biocontrol in food processing environments.

Identification and Characterization of a Novel Genomic Island Harboring Cadmium and Arsenic Resistance Genes in Listeria welshimeri

Summary: Listeria monocytogenes, responsible for listeriosis, often shows resistance to heavy metals like cadmium and arsenic, which is linked to the chromosomal island LGI2. A novel LGI2 variant, LGI2-3, has been found in Listeria welshimeri strains from an urban aquatic environment, carrying a unique cadAC gene cassette and showing lower cadmium tolerance compared to other cassettes. This discovery suggests the potential for non-pathogenic Listeria species to harbor LGI2-like islands, leading to interesting hypotheses on genetic diversity and island transfer among Listeria species.
