Activation of the JNKs/ATM-p53 axis is indispensable for the cytoprotection of dermal fibroblasts exposed to UVB radiation

Eleni Mavrogonatou et al.

Summary: The crucial signaling pathways regulating the survival of UVB-treated human dermal fibroblasts were investigated in this study. The results showed that MAPK family members, Akt, EGFR, Nrf2, JNKs, and ATM-p53 are involved in the viability regulation. EGFR/Akt and Nrf2 act as auxiliary anti-apoptotic machineries, while JNKs/ATM-p53 activation and interplay are necessary for cellular defense and maintenance of cell viability.

Oxidative Stress Modulation by Carnosine in Scaffold Free Human Dermis Spheroids Model: A Proteomic Study

Gilda Aiello et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism of action of carnosine on the human skin proteome using a 3D scaffold-free spheroid model. The results showed that carnosine prevented the aging process of dermis spheroids by downregulating functional modules related to oxidative stress.

Simultaneous NAD(P)H and FAD fluorescence lifetime microscopy of long UVA-induced metabolic stress in reconstructed human skin

Thi Phuong Lien Ung et al.

Summary: Exposure of human skin to solar ultraviolet longwave UVA1 leads to oxidative stress, affecting cellular metabolic activity. Assessment of UVA1-induced metabolic stress response with multicolor two-photon fluorescence lifetime microscopy reveals metabolic switch and cell sensitivity to oxidative stress. A sunscreen with UVA1 filter can prevent the metabolic stress response.

Study of Carnosine's effect on nude mice skin to prevent UV-A damage

Radrezza Silvia et al.

Summary: This study used a quantitative proteomic approach to analyze the effects of carnosine on the skin proteome of hairless mice exposed to UV-A radiation, finding that carnosine can prevent the alterations in skin proteome induced by UV-A. Functional pathways were disrupted in the skins of UV-A exposed hairless mice, with impaired mitochondrial function and metabolism, which were prevented by pre-treatment with carnosine.
