Investigation on the potential of applying bio-based edible coatings for horticultural products exemplified with cucumbers

G. Rux et al.

Summary: Plastic packaging for fresh horticultural produce has advantages but generates waste, so ecological alternatives are needed. Edible coatings can slow down quality loss processes. Hydrophobic lipid-based coatings are preferred for fresh fruits and vegetables. The efficiency of various edible coatings on soft-skinned produce is rarely studied, and consumer acceptance is unclear. This study investigates the characteristics and effects of a lipid-based coating on fresh cucumbers, finding significant reduction in water loss, fruit respiration, and prolongation of shelf life. Majority of consumers endorse edible coatings as plastic packaging alternative with specific requirements.

Green-sustainable extraction techniques for the recovery of antioxidant compounds from citrus Limon by-products

Valeria Imeneo et al.

Summary: This study applied optimized techniques of conventional, ultrasound, and microwave-assisted extraction to recover antioxidant compounds from lemon by-products. The results showed that using a hydroalcoholic mixture (ethanol:water, 50:50) as the solvent, and performing the extraction under ultrasound assistance, yielded the highest content of antioxidant compounds. This research provides valuable information for valorizing industrial by-products through sustainable techniques for the recovery of high-added value substances.
