A review on recent advancements in biodegradable Mg-Ca alloys

Manas Ranjan Sahu et al.

Summary: Binary Mg-Ca alloys are receiving increasing attention as temporary implant materials due to their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and good mechanical properties. However, their high degradation rates, hydrogen gas release, and rapid loss in mechanical properties in the human physiological environment limit their applications. Researchers have addressed these issues through control of Ca content, thermo-mechanical processing, and surface coatings.

Clarifying the roles of grain boundary and grain orientation on the corrosion and discharge processes of α-Mg based Mg-Li alloys for primary Mg-air batteries

Huabao Yang et al.

Summary: The corrosion and discharge behavior of two alpha-Mg based Mg-Li alloys with different microstructural features were investigated. Grain boundaries were found to contribute equally to these processes and were preferentially attacked. The LAZ531 alloy showed high and steady discharge voltage at small discharge current density.

Effect of processing history on corrosion behaviours of high purity Mg

Sang Kyu Woo et al.

Summary: The study systematically analyzed the effects of processing history on corrosion behaviors of pure Mg with controlled impurity content. It was found that impurity Fe and Si precipitated into the Fe-Si phase by heat treatment prior to extrusion, leading to severe micro-galvanic corrosion of as-extruded pure Mg. This suggests that control of the actual tolerance limit, considering both impurity content and processing history, is required in designing alloys.

Deteriorated corrosion performance of micro-alloyed Mg-Zn alloy after heat treatment and mechanical processing

Yiming Jin et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of Mg-0.5Zn deteriorated with the extension of solution treatment duration due to the formation of Fe-Si precipitates. Fe-Si precipitates, especially those with high Fe contents, significantly influenced the corrosion initiation and propagation. Directly extruded cast samples showed better corrosion performance compared to solution-treated and then extruded samples.

Evading strength-corrosion tradeoff in Mg alloys via dense ultrafine twins

Changjian Yan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ultrafine grained Mg alloys with dense twins exhibit high strength and reduced corrosion rate compared to conventional ultrafine grains, achieved through a carefully designed multi-directional compression treatment refining grain size down to 300nm. This technique not only decreases micro-galvanic corrosion tendency, but also completely suppresses severe localized corrosion.
