Moonlighting in Rickettsiales: Expanding Virulence Landscape

Ana Luisa Matos et al.

Summary: The order Rickettsiales includes species that cause a range of human diseases, which are still a major public health concern due to resurgence patterns and geographical expansion. As obligate intracellular bacteria, Rickettsiales are characterized by their small genome sizes due to reductive evolution. Many pathogens employ moonlighting/multitasking proteins as virulence factors to enhance their virulence.

Identification of a new orthonairovirus associated with human febrile illness in China

Jun Ma et al.

Summary: A new Orthonairovirus, Songling virus (SGLV), was identified in patients bitten by ticks in Heilongjiang Province, China. SGLV displayed similar features to other Orthonairoviruses and formed a unique clade within the Tamdy Orthonairovirus in the Nairoviridae family. Infection with SGLV caused symptoms like headache, fever, depression, fatigue, and dizziness in hospitalized patients, with 69% developing virus-specific antibodies in the acute phase, indicating its association with human febrile illness in China.

Molecular investigation of tick-borne pathogens in ticks removed from tick-bitten humans in the southwestern region of the Republic of Korea

Mi Seon Bang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of tick-borne pathogens in ticks removed from tick-bitten humans in the southwestern provinces of the Republic of Korea. The findings revealed the detection of spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Babesia spp. as the most common pathogens carried by ticks, with the identification of three predominant tick species. This study also reported the first detection of R. tamurae and Ca. R. jingxinensis in Korea, contributing to the understanding of tick-borne infections in animals and humans in the ROK.

A novel nairovirus associated with acute febrile illness in Hokkaido, Japan

Fumihiro Kodama et al.

Summary: Kodama et al. discovered and characterized a novel tick-borne orthonairovirus, named Yezo virus (YEZV), in Japan. Serological testing and molecular screening suggested an endemic circulation of YEZV in Japan. The study indicates that YEZV is likely the causative pathogen of febrile illness transmitted by ticks in Japan.
