Nutritional and bioactive oils from salmon (Salmo salar) side streams obtained by Soxhlet and optimized microwave-assisted extraction

Lillian Barros et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) technique for recovering oils from salmon side streams and compared it with Soxhlet extraction. The optimal MAE conditions were determined using response surface methodology (RSM) and resulted in high recovery rates of lipid content. The oils obtained under optimal MAE conditions showed a healthy lipid profile and various bioactive properties. These findings indicate the potential of utilizing oils from underutilized salmon by-products under the circular economy approach.
