Safety of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in patients with Behcet's syndrome and familial Mediterranean fever: a cross-sectional comparative study on the effects of M-RNA based and inactivated vaccine

Summary: This study investigated the side effects and disease flares after COVID-19 vaccination in patients with Behcet's syndrome (BS), familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), and rheumatic diseases (RD), who were vaccinated with Pfizer/BioNTech or Sinovac/CoronaVac. The study found that BioNTech had better efficacy against COVID-19 in all patient groups compared to CoronaVac, but the frequency of adverse events (AE) was higher with BioNTech. Most AEs were mild to moderate and transient. There were also AEs that required medical attention, mainly due to disease flares and cardiovascular events. BS and FMF patients had significantly higher flare rates, which may indicate defects in innate immunity. Therefore, caution should be exercised in monitoring these patients after vaccination.
