Type I Interferons Promote Germinal Centers Through B Cell Intrinsic Signaling and Dendritic Cell Dependent Th1 and Tfh Cell Lineages

Madelene W. W. Dahlgren et al.

Summary: Type I interferons play a crucial role in antiviral immunity, mRNA vaccine adjuvanticity, and severity of autoimmune diseases. They enhance germinal center B cell responses through signaling in cDCs and B cells, influencing IgG subclass distribution. This pathway involves both Th1 and Tfh cell-dependent pathways to drive GC formation and coordinate IgG subclass distribution.

Detection of Antiviral Tissue Responses and Increased Cell Stress in the Pancreatic Islets of Newly Diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes Patients: Results From the DiViD Study

Lars Krogvold et al.

Summary: The study reveals that newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes patients have enhanced gene expressions related to cellular stress and increased immunological activity in their islet cells compared to controls. Additionally, increased viral response proteins were observed in beta-cells of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes patients, providing evidence for the hypothesis that enteroviral infection of islet beta-cells contributes to the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes.

Myocarditis and inflammatory cardiomyopathy: current evidence and future directions

Carsten Tschoepe et al.

Summary: Inflammatory cardiomyopathy is a disease characterized by inflammatory cell infiltration into the myocardium and is predominantly mediated by viral infection. Despite extensive research, inflammatory cardiomyopathy complicated by left ventricular dysfunction, heart failure or arrhythmia is associated with a poor prognosis. The relative roles of the pathogen, host genomics and environmental factors in disease progression and healing are still under discussion.

Environmental Determinants of Type 1 Diabetes: From Association to Proving Causality

Lauren M. Quinn et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of environmental factors in the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D), focusing on infections, growth and obesity in infancy, the gut microbiome, and lifestyle choices. Evidence suggests that enterovirus infection, rapid weight gain in early life, and the microbiome are the most significant environmental determinants of T1D. Future research should explore these triggers further through randomized controlled trials and prospective studies to aid in the development of public health prevention strategies.

Mt10-CVB3 Vaccine Virus Protects against CVB4 Infection by Inducing Cross-Reactive, Antigen-Specific Immune Responses

Ninaad Lasrado et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the Mt10 vaccine can induce cross-protection against multiple CVB serotypes, including the ability to generate cross-reactive neutralizing antibodies for CVB1 and CVB4. The vaccine showed 92% efficacy in preventing myocarditis and pancreatitis caused by CVB4, with cross-reactive neutralizing antibodies against CVB1, CVB3, and CVB4 persisting in the animals. Evaluation of antigen-specific immune responses indicated the production of viral protein 1 (VP1)-reactive antibodies and VP1-specific CD4 T cells capable of producing multiple T cell cytokines. Furthermore, no viral nucleic acid was found in the heart or pancreas of vaccinated animals challenged with CVB4, suggesting the potential of the Mt10 vaccine for preventing heart and pancreatic diseases caused by enteroviruses.

Development of Group B Coxsackievirus as an Oncolytic Virus: Opportunities and Challenges

Huitao Liu et al.

Summary: Oncolytic viruses, particularly coxsackievirus group B (CVBs), have shown promising potential in cancer therapy by selectively infecting and destroying tumor cells, as well as inducing systemic anti-tumor immunity. Type 3 CVBs have demonstrated potent anti-tumor activities against various cancer types. Strategies to enhance specificity and safety of CVBs towards tumor cells are being explored to further increase their anti-tumor efficacy.
