The societal value of SARS-CoV-2 booster vaccination in Indonesia

Rob Johnson et al.

Summary: This study estimated the socio-economic value of booster vaccination by comparing the costs with and without boosters using simulation modelling. The results showed that booster vaccination can significantly reduce the need for costly non-pharmaceutical interventions and bring substantial societal benefits. It is recommended to consider all socio-economic costs, not just the number of averted deaths, in policy decision-making and vaccination evaluation.

The Value of Vaccines in Maintaining Health System Capacity in England

Simon Brassel et al.

Summary: In situations of excess demand for healthcare, the opportunity costs of treating vaccine-preventable diseases instead of patients from waiting lists are not fully considered when assessing the value of health technologies. A pragmatic approach is presented to conceptualize the health benefits of vaccines, proxying opportunity costs through the net monetary benefit forgone as scarce healthcare resources are used to treat a vaccine-preventable disease. The study estimates the opportunity costs saved by vaccination programs, emphasizing the importance of considering health system capacity value in health technology assessment.

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on community respiratory virus activity

Eric J. Chow et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected global respiratory virus infections, with varying degrees of changes seen in different virus types. Non-pharmaceutical interventions have been implemented by governments, with differences observed after the availability of COVID-19 vaccines. Reductions in respiratory virus infections have resulted in decreased hospitalizations and deaths associated with these infections.

Economic Burden of COVID-19: A Systematic Review

Fayolah Richards et al.

Summary: This article reviews and synthesizes the evidence on the economic burden of COVID-19, including healthcare resource utilization and costs. The study found that patients with severe COVID-19 were associated with higher costs, mainly driven by ICU admission and in-hospital resource use such as mechanical ventilation. Productivity losses were the most frequently reported indirect costs. Older patients incurred higher costs compared to younger age groups. A Monte Carlo simulation estimated a total direct medical cost of $163.4 billion in the United States based on a 20% COVID-19 infection rate. Preventive measures such as non-pharmaceutical interventions only partially succeeded in reducing the economic costs of the pandemic. Implementing additional measures such as large-scale vaccination is crucial in reducing direct and indirect medical costs, productivity losses, and GDP losses.

Realising the broader value of vaccines in the UK

Simon Brassel et al.

Summary: The study highlights the systematic undervaluation of vaccines in traditional health technology assessments, especially in assessing the broader societal value of vaccines. The authors designed a framework to capture the broader value of vaccines and identified critical gaps between potential value generation and recognition within current evaluation frameworks. Recommendations include incorporating the impact of vaccines on antimicrobial resistance and other health interventions, adopting a societal perspective, and considering the fiscal impact of vaccines on societies.
