Human embryonic stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles alleviate retinal degeneration by upregulating Oct4 to promote retinal Muller cell retrodifferentiation via HSP90

Yifeng Ke et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that human embryonic stem extracellular vesicles (hESEVs) extracted from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) could promote the retrodifferentiation of Muller cells into retinal progenitor cells by regulating the expression of Oct4 in Muller cells through the mediation of HSP90 in microvesicles (MVs).

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Exosomes as a New Strategy for the Treatment of Diabetes Complications

Jiachao Xiong et al.

Summary: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels, often accompanied by various complications. Mesenchymal stem cell exosomes possess repair functions, low immunogenicity, and ease of storage and transportation, making them a potentially effective treatment for diabetes and its complications.

Emerging Role of Exosomes in Retinal Diseases

Zhengyu Zhang et al.

Summary: Retinal diseases, leading causes of vision loss and blindness, involve complex pathogeneses such as angiogenesis, inflammation, immune regulation, fibrous proliferation, and neurodegeneration. Exosomes, as important mediators of cell communication, carry a variety of biomolecules and have the potential to be therapeutically effective in treating retinal diseases.

Pharmacological inhibition of mitochondrial fission attenuates oxidative stress-induced damage of retinal pigmented epithelial cells

Tomohiro Yako et al.

Summary: Mitochondria maintain their function through dynamics involving fusion and fission. Inhibition of excessive fission may offer a novel therapeutic strategy for diseases related to mitochondrial dysfunction. Suppression of mitochondrial fragmentation could be a promising therapeutic target for non-exudative AMD.

Labial gland-derived mesenchymal stem cells and their exosomes ameliorate murine Sjogren's syndrome by modulating the balance of Treg and Th17 cells

Boya Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that LGMSCs or LGMSC-Exos have potential therapeutic effects against Sjogren's syndrome (SS), reducing inflammatory infiltration in salivary glands and restoring secretory function. They were also found to inhibit Th17 cell differentiation, promote Treg cell induction, decrease levels of IL-17, interferon gamma, and IL-6, and increase secretion of transforming growth factor beta and IL-10. These findings suggest that LGMSCs are promising for MSCs-based therapy and LGMSC-Exos could be used for a new cell-free therapy for SS.

Ageing and mesenchymal stem cells derived exosomes: Molecular insight and challenges

Mahdi Ahmadi et al.

Summary: Ageing is a significant risk factor for various degenerative diseases, affecting the senescence and function of Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) and their exosomes. Exosomes derived from aged MSCs exhibit accelerated biogenesis, altered cargoes, and reduced regenerative potential, potentially impacting recipient cell function negatively. Further research is required to elucidate the detailed mechanisms and translation of preclinical results into clinically relevant exosome therapies for combating ageing.
