Enhancement in the mechanical behaviour of a Schwarz Primitive periodic minimal surface lattice structure design

Xiao Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, an improved Schwarz primitive lattice structure was proposed by redefining the original opening diameter with a shape parameter. Experimental results showed that the modified P lattice structure with a small opening diameter had increased Young's modulus, compressive strength, and energy absorption compared to the original P lattice structure.

Multi-scale defects in powder-based additively manufactured metals and alloys

J. Fu et al.

Summary: This review paper addresses the formation, influence, and control of defects in powder-based metal additive manufacturing (AM). It classifies the defects into three categories: geometry-related, surface integrity-related, and microstructural defects, and discusses their root causes and influencing factors. The paper also introduces detection methods and modeling for these defects, and reviews their effects on the mechanical properties of AMed metallic components. Various control and mitigation methods are summarized and discussed. The research gaps and future prospects of the multi-scale AM defects are identified.

Improved light-weighting potential of SS316L triply periodic minimal surface shell lattices by micro laser powder bed fusion

Jin Fu et al.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated low-density triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) shell lattices with smaller feature size using micro laser powder bed fusion (mu LPBF) technology. The compressive responses and lightweight potential of these TPMS structures were analyzed through quasi-static compression tests and finite element modeling. The results showed that the deformation mechanism changed from localized collapse to homogeneous bulk deformation with increasing relative density. Different types of TPMS structures exhibited varied mechanical properties and lightweight potential.

Design optimization of a novel bio-inspired 3D porous structure for crashworthiness

Hanfeng Yin et al.

Summary: A novel hierarchical three-dimensional porous (H3DP) structure inspired by bone in nature was created and showed excellent energy absorption capacity. Numerical simulation and experimental validation revealed that the crashworthiness of the H3DP structure is influenced by design parameters, and multi-objective optimization was conducted to obtain the optimal design.

Mechanical characterization and properties of laser-based powder bed-fused lattice structures: a review

Leonardo Riva et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for wider access to additive manufacturing technologies is driving the production of metal lattice structures with powder bed fusion techniques, especially laser-based powder bed fusion. Lattice structures are suitable for applications in aerospace, automotive, and biomedicine due to their tailored porosity, low weight, and tunable mechanical properties. Despite extensive studies on their physical and mechanical properties in recent years, there is still a lack of specific standards for their characterization.

Architected cellular materials: A review on their mechanical properties towards fatigue-tolerant design and fabrication

M. Benedetti et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing is now a mature technology that is being used to produce high-performance parts, including mission-critical components. The intentional design of porous metal structures, such as cellular or lattice structures, offers advantages in terms of specific mechanical or performance characteristics. While concerns over structural integrity remain, improvements in the manufacturing processes are leading to better fatigue properties for additively manufactured cellular structures.

Mechanical characteristics and deformation mechanism of functionally graded triply periodic minimal surface structures fabricated using stereolithography

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures are widely used for their smooth surface and pore interconnectivity, and a novel design approach based on the log-sigmoid function has been proposed in this study. Functionally graded TPMS structures were successfully fabricated using stereolithography, with the I-WP type showing superior mechanical properties. The study revealed a combination of stretching-and bending-dominated failure deformations in these structures.

Achieving Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Thin-Walled Structures by Micro Laser Powder Bed Fusion Process

Shuo Qu et al.

Summary: This study explores the fabrication method and properties of thin-walled structures (TWS) of TPMS lattice using micro LPBF technology and stainless steel 316L material. By optimizing parameters, cube samples with high relative density and low roughness can be produced, as well as thin-walled structures with a thickness of 100 microns. The TWS samples of TPMS lattice show significant improvement in heat dissipation performance.
