Improvement of resistance spot weldability of Al-Fe-alloy-coated HPF steel sheets

Sang-Man Yun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the resistance spot weldability of Al-Fe alloy-coated (AlFe-c) high-strength steels manufactured by heat-treating Al-Si coated (AlSi-c) steels at 650 degrees C for 10 h. The presence of thick oxides in the surface layer of AlFe-c steel resulted in higher transition resistance and poorer weldability compared to conventional AlSi-c steels. By applying a pre-pulse current pattern, the oxides in the coating layer were removed, reducing the resistance of the weld part and delaying expulsion, thus improving the weldable current range of AlFe-c steel.

Influence of solidification structure on austenite to martensite transformation in additively manufactured hot-work tool steels

Chia-Ying Chou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure of a hot-work tool steel manufactured using laser powder-bed fusion (L-PBF) and its response to post heat treatment through microstructure characterization and computational thermodynamics and kinetics. The high solidification and cooling rates during L-PBF process lead to the formation of an austenite phase with segregated alloying elements and solidification carbides. The austenite is partly transformed into martensite at lower temperatures, and micro-segregation can be predicted and compared with measured profiles at a nanometer scale.
