A Review of 3D/4D Printing of Poly-Lactic Acid Composites with Bio-Derived Reinforcements

Lakshmi Priya Muthe et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the current state of 3D/4D printing PLA composites with bio-derived reinforcements, highlighting recent progress and future opportunities. Different forms of bio-derived reinforcements for PLA used in fused deposition modelling (FDM) are summarized, along with factors influencing the resulting printed composites' performance and research gaps that need addressing. The review also emphasizes the importance of enhancing material properties before, during, and after printing, as well as the need for innovative filament production and printing technologies.

Interfacial improvements in cellulose nanofibers reinforced polylactide bionanocomposites prepared by in situ reactive extrusion

Feng-Jiao Li et al.

Summary: In-situ grafting of PLA onto cellulose nanofibers using DCP as initiator enhanced the interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of the resulting bionanocomposites, with significant improvements in tensile modulus, strength, elongation at break, and impact strength. The increased crystallinity of the grafted CNF-g-PLA and improved melt strength of the nanocomposites contribute to the enhanced properties.

Creaming Layers of Nanocellulose Stabilized Water-Based Polystyrene: High-Solids Emulsions for 3D Printing

Marie Gestranius et al.

Summary: Oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanofibrils form stable creaming layers suitable for in situ polymerization of styrene to prepare emulsion-based dope. The approach allows easy water removal to obtain a paste-like material with good properties. The composite containing biobased materials and synthetic polymer shows promise for direct-ink-writing of small objects, paving the way for preparation of composite materials through emulsion templating.

Summary: Additive manufacturing is a process of producing complex 3D parts layer-by-layer, with Fused Deposition Modeling being a commonly used method. By adding reinforcement materials like carbon fiber, the mechanical properties of FDM-produced parts can be improved for engineering applications. Fracture interfaces and interfacial bonds of the 3D printed parts can be studied through optical microscope analysis after mechanical testing.
