Domain decomposition of the two-temperature model in DL_POLY_4

Michael A. Seaton et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method of including the effects of excited electrons in classical simulations through the coupling of a two-temperature model with a grid-based finite-difference solver and classical molecular dynamics simulations. Domain decomposition is used to simulate large systems, including both particle-based and grid-based techniques. By implementing the two-temperature model in DL_POLY_4 and dividing temperature grids among processor cores in a similar fashion, with appropriate communications between cores, the domain decomposition of the temperature grids is achieved.

Ultrafast nanoimaging of the order parameter in a structural phase transition

Thomas Danz et al.

Summary: This research introduces ultrafast dark-field electron microscopy to investigate the order parameter across a structural phase transition, using ultrashort laser pulses to locally excite a thin film and imaging the transient state of the specimen with ultrashort electron pulses. The study tracks the evolution of charge-density wave domains in the material with femtosecond temporal and 5-nanometer spatial resolution, revealing relaxation pathways and domain wall dynamics. The selective contrast enhancement in this study will inspire future advancements in beam-shaping technology for ultrafast transmission electron microscopy.

Thermoelastic modeling of laser-induced generation of strong surface acoustic waves

Maxim Shugaev et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that under nonablative thermoelastic irradiation regime, laser pulses with appropriate spot size and energy deposition depth can generate high-intensity surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in Si, with strain amplitudes reaching levels of 10^-4 to 10^-3. These strong SAWs have the potential to drive nonlinear profile sharpening and shock front formation during their propagation, presenting the feasibility of continuous generation of strong nonlinear pulses of SAWs for various applications.

Initial Morphology and Feedback Effects on Laser-Induced Periodic Nanostructuring of Thin-Film Metallic Glasses

Mathilde Prudent et al.

Summary: Surface nanostructuring by femtosecond laser is an efficient way to manipulate surface topography and create advanced functionalities. Thin-film metallic glasses obtained by physical vapor deposition exhibit unique properties making them resilient to laser-induced nanopatterns. The morphological response of Zr65Cu35 alloys under ultrafast irradiation and the use of double pulses femtosecond laser are critical for forming uniform nanostructures in materials with poor predisposition.
