Predicting plastic events and quantifying the local yield surface in 3D model glasses

Dihui Ruan et al.

Summary: By applying the local yield stress (LYS) method to probe local regions of three-dimensional computational glass models, high correlations were confirmed between the measured local yield stress (Delta tau(c)) and plastic events when the method was properly optimized. The optimal probing region was found to be around 5 sigma in radius, with the averaged correlation remaining positive through the first 200 identified plastic events or 1/3 of the yielding strain.

Anisotropic correlations of plasticity on the yielding of metallic glasses

Shiheng Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, computer simulations were conducted to investigate the shear deformation of CuZr metallic glasses at different temperatures. The results reveal the emergence of shear bands at a specific strain point in athermal alloys, and the presence of a finite-size effect. The correlation of nonaffine displacement shows an exponential decay in thermal alloys even after yielding, whereas it transitions to a power law in athermal alloys at a certain strain point.

Universal Density of Low-Frequency States in Amorphous Solids at Finite Temperatures

Prasenjit Das et al.

Summary: It has been established that low frequency quasilocalized modes of amorphous solids at zero temperature exhibit universal density of states, possibly extending to finite temperatures. Research shows that well quenched model glasses at temperatures as high as T-g/3 possess the same universal density of states, as long as average particle positions stabilize before thermal diffusion destroys the cage structure of the material. The universal density of quasilocalized low frequency modes refers to vibrations around the thermally averaged configuration of the material.

Giant configurational softening controls atomic-level process of shear banding in metallic glasses

Summary: Through atomistic simulations, the origin of flow localization, the birth of a shear band, was clarified. Configuration-softening and thermal-softening are two potential causes for shear banding emergence, with configuration-softening being the dominant instability mode.

Yielding of amorphous solids at finite temperatures

E. E. Ferrero et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of temperature on the yielding transition of amorphous solids is analyzed using different coarse-grained model approaches. It is found that temperature transforms the sharp transition into a smooth crossover. The thermally smoothed transition follows a simple scaling form and can be explained using a specific system.

Avalanches in the Athermal Quasistatic Limit of Sheared Amorphous Solids: An Atomistic Perspective

Celine Ruscher et al.

Summary: The study focused on the statistical properties of the yielding transition in model amorphous solids under slow, athermal deformation, revealing plastic flow through a combination of elastic loading and collective avalanches. The spatial extent of avalanches and degree of stress correlations change as deformation progresses. It was found that the statistics of stress and energy drops only become comparable for large events in the steady flow regime.

Plasticity in Amorphous Solids Is Mediated by Topological Defects in the Displacement Field

Summary: This research reveals the existence of topological defects related to plastic instability in the nonaffine displacement field under deformation. The study of these defects uncovers new characteristics of plastic deformation in glasses and confirms the violation of Cauchy-Born rules and the impact of topological defects on plastic events.

Unified view of avalanche criticality in sheared glasses

Summary: The study reveals the presence of different avalanche events in sheared glasses, leading to nonuniversal behavior in the avalanche size distribution, with the critical exponent tau matching the prediction of MFD theory. As shear is applied, the system gradually transitions into a critical state.
