Direct measurements of infrared intensities of HCN and H2O + HCN ices for laboratory and observational astrochemistry

Perry A. Gerakines et al.

Summary: In this study, the intrinsic IR spectral intensities of solid HCN were investigated and the absorption coefficients, band strengths, refractive indices, and densities of amorphous and crystalline HCN at two temperatures were measured. The results showed that the previously estimated vibration intensity of HCN was significantly underestimated and required a rescaling of earlier work. This study sheds light on the difficulty of identifying HCN and other nitriles in the solid state compared to their detections in the gas phase.

A New Method for Measuring Infrared Band Strengths in H2O Ices: First Results for OCS, H2S, and SO2

Yukiko Y. Yarnall et al.

Summary: Infrared (IR) band strength measurements are important for determining accurate molecular abundances in interstellar and solar system ices. This study presents a method that overcomes common assumptions and uncertainties in IR band-strength determinations, and reports the first measurements of IR band strengths of OCS, H2S, and SO2 in the presence and absence of H2O ice at 10 K. The results demonstrate that the presence of H2O ice has little effect on the IR intensities of the strongest features of these sulfur-containing molecules. This method has immediate application in laboratory studies of low-temperature chemistry in interstellar and cometary ices.

Influence of grain growth on CO2 ice spectroscopic profiles Modelling for dense cores and disks

E. Dartois et al.

Summary: This study explores the effect of grain growth on the spectroscopic profiles of ice mantle constituents, focusing particularly on carbon dioxide. The results show that the profile of carbon dioxide can serve as an indicator of grain growth, and observations have already shown signs of moderate grain growth. Future observations of protoplanetary disks with high inclination using the James Webb Space Telescope can provide constraints on the extent of dust growth.

Ice Age: Chemodynamical Modeling of Cha-MMS1 to Predict New Solid-phase Species for Detection with JWST

Mihwa Jin et al.

Summary: Chemical models and experiments suggest that interstellar dust grains and their ice mantles contribute to the production of complex organic molecules. This study predicts new candidate species for detection by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) using a chemodynamical model. The model provides insights into the abundance and infrared spectrum of the ice species, contributing to the understanding of organic molecule formation.

Summary: We report the serendipitous discovery of an [O iii] and H α line emitter in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) using data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) taken in the NIRCam WFSS mode. This discovery provides direct spectroscopic evidence for the presence of strong rest-frame optical lines in EoR galaxies, as inferred previously from Spitzer/IRAC spectral energy distributions (SEDs).

Summary: The origin of complex organic molecules in young Class 0 protostars has been a major question in the field of astrochemistry and star formation. This study uses sensitive mid-infrared spectroscopy with JWST to investigate the formation of these molecules. The analysis reveals the presence of several major solid-state absorption features and weaker emission lines, providing insights into the protostellar systems and potentially uncovering previously unseen disks.

A non-energetic mechanism for glycine formation in the interstellar medium

S. Ioppolo et al.

Summary: The laboratory detection of glycine formed in the solid phase without the need for energetic processing suggests that amino acids may form at the very earliest stages of star formation. The presence of glycine and its precursor on a comet provides strong evidence for a cosmic origin of amino acids on Earth. The process of amino acid formation during star formation remains debated, but experiments suggest that glycine could form in interstellar water-rich ices without energetic irradiation, enriching planet-forming material with prebiotic chemistry.

Carbon Atom Reactivity with Amorphous Solid Water: H2O-Catalyzed Formation of H2CO

German Molpeceres et al.

Summary: The study presents a new formation pathway for formaldehyde (H2CO) involving the reaction of carbon atoms with amorphous solid water. The mechanism proposed, which includes proton transfer catalysis and low barriers, helps to explain the observed small kinetic isotope effect in experiments comparing the formation of H2CO to D2CO.

Fitting infrared ice spectra with genetic modelling algorithms Presenting the ENIIGMA fitting tool

W. R. M. Rocha et al.

Summary: The ENIIGMA fitting tool, based on evolutionary algorithms, successfully identifies ice samples and their fractions with known ice samples. It can decompose the broad spectral range of Elias 29 spectrum, allowing the identification of different molecules in the ice mantle. ENIIGMA is a timely toolbox for spectroscopy analysis of infrared spectra, enabling correct interpretation of astronomical observations in different chemical environments and irradiation fields.
