Prognostic Role of Hemispherical Functional Connectivity in Stroke: A Study via Graph Theory Versus Coherence of Electroencephalography Rhythms

Fabrizio Vecchio et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to explore whether acute stroke may result in changes in brain network architecture by electroencephalography functional coupling analysis and graph theory. The results showed significant differences in network connectivity and small worldness between stroke patients and healthy individuals, and these differences were correlated with clinical outcomes. These findings can help predict stroke patients' recovery and provide guidance for personalized rehabilitation programs.

Approximate entropy analysis across electroencephalographic rhythmic frequency bands during physiological aging of human brain

Chiara Pappalettera et al.

Summary: Aging leads to progressive decline in brain structure and function, along with changes in resting/task-related brain activity, morphology, plasticity, and functionality. This study used entropy measures of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals to analyze the effects of physiological aging on the human brain. The results showed statistical differences in entropy values between young and elderly participants, suggesting the potential of entropy as a sensitive measure for studying cognitive decline and cortical alteration/degeneration in the elderly.

Human Brain Networks in Physiological and Pathological Aging: Reproducibility of Electroencephalogram Graph Theoretical Analysis in Cortical Connectivity

Fabrizio Vecchio et al.

Summary: This study assessed the stability of a proposed method for evaluating small-world characteristics in studying human connectivity. The results showed that the method had good reproducibility and stability, and revealed an age-related pattern in small-world characteristics of brain waves. The study provides important insights for understanding brain aging and related diseases.

Analysis of complexity in the EEG activity of Parkinson's disease patients by means of approximate entropy

Chiara Pappalettera et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to explore the differences in brain resting state between Parkinson's disease patients and healthy controls in terms of complexity of EEG signals. The results showed that Parkinson's disease patients had higher complexity in their EEG signals, indicating a remarkable modification of brain complexity and organization. Applying nonlinear approaches to EEG analysis could potentially be a useful tool in diagnosing and monitoring the progression of Parkinson's disease, as well as designing personalized rehabilitation programs.

Time-frequency analysis of brain activity in response to directional and non-directional visual stimuli: an event related spectral perturbations (ERSP) study

Fabrizio Vecchio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the differences between directional and non-directional visual stimuli processing by analyzing brain electroencephalographic activity. The results show that the processing of visual stimuli enhances similar patterns of spectral modulation in different brain regions, with significant differences observed in the occipital region. These findings suggest that event related spectral perturbations (ERSPs) could be a useful tool for studying visual information encoding in the brain.

Assessing the dependence of the number of EEG channels in the brain networks' modulations

Francesca Miraglia et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the impact of EEG channels number on brain networks' analysis, finding that more channels influence the small-world index more in eyes open condition. In contrast, brain activity in eyes closed condition is less affected by specific regions' activations, and the small-world network measure is not affected by the number of recording channels. A montage of 19 EEG channels is deemed acceptable for studying brain networks' modulations in eyes closed condition.

Graph Theory on Brain Cortical Sources in Parkinson's Disease: The Analysis of 'Small World' Organization from EEG

Fabrizio Vecchio et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease can globally modulate the cortical connectivity of the brain, altering functional network organization and resulting in motor and non-motor symptoms. This approach based on a low-cost and non-invasive technique may be useful for early diagnosis, monitoring disease progression, and evaluating treatments.

Functional Brain Networks in Mild Cognitive Impairment Based on Resting Electroencephalography Signals

Nadia Youssef et al.

Summary: This study investigated the functional brain network alterations in aMCI patients before and after cognitive tasks, revealing distinct patterns in the theta band and beta EEG between aMCI and control groups. The results showed that the functional network disruptions in aMCI patients were more pronounced during post-task resting states, suggesting potential biomarkers of cognitive dysfunction. The classification accuracy improved when combining functional connectivity, brain topology, and MMSE test measures compared to using them separately.

A Comparative Study of Structural and Metabolic Brain Networks in Patients With Mild Cognitive Impairment

Cuibai Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that changes in the structural brain networks were more pronounced than the metabolic brain networks in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and certain brain regions were associated with MCI. The correlation between atrophy in key brain regions and cognitive function is important in understanding the pathological mechanisms of MCI.

EEG Characteristics to Hyperventilation by Age and Sex in Patients With Various Neurological Disorders

Irma Khachidze et al.

Summary: The study found that all three types of PERH were present in the first, second, and third minutes of HPT across all age and sex groups, showing disorganized basic EEG rhythm. The first minute showed comparable results for both sexes, but some differences were observed between females and males in the second and third minutes. The second and third types of PERH were only found in women, with the second type appearing in 13-18-year-old girls during the second minute of HPT.
