Carbonaceous matter in the atmosphere and glaciers of the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau: An investigative review

Chaoliu Li et al.

Summary: Carbonaceous matter, including organic carbon and black carbon, plays a significant role in climate forcing and glacier retreat in the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau. Research on carbonaceous matter in the region has been challenging due to complex terrain and strong spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Concentrations of carbonaceous matter are found to be low in the atmosphere and glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau, with potential overestimations in arid regions due to contributions from inorganic carbon in mineral dust. Transport from outside sources, such as South Asia, is a major contributor to carbonaceous matter in the Tibetan Plateau, although local emissions may also play a role in certain locations.

Shakil Ahmad Romshoo et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the characteristics of particulate matter in Srinagar, Kashmir Himalaya, India from 2013 to 2017, and found that PM levels were influenced by meteorological conditions, anthropogenic activities, and topographic features. High PM concentrations were observed during autumn and winter due to specific meteorological conditions and anthropogenic emissions while spring and summer facilitated dispersion and dilution of PM.

Summary: The study identified differences in carbonaceous, chemical components, and size distribution in aerosols collected under different polluted air masses. Southeasterly air masses enriched with secondary anthropogenic aerosols, while primary aerosols in northwesterly and southwest air masses mainly came from sea-salts, dust, and NOx emissions.

Summary: The study investigated the seasonal characteristics and prominent sources of PM2.5 and PM10 in the high altitude of the eastern Himalaya, showing monthly and seasonal variations in carbonaceous aerosols and elements. The analysis identified four common sources of PM2.5 and PM10 in Darjeeling, highlighting the influence of mineral dust and the positive relationship between different components of aerosols.

Carbonaceous Aerosols over Lachung in the Eastern Himalayas: Primary Sources and Secondary Formation of Organic Aerosols in a Remote High-Altitude Environment

B. S. Arun et al.

Summary: The Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau is highly sensitive to carbonaceous aerosols, with organic carbon dominating in winter and aqueous phase formation of aerosols being prominent in spring. The role of north-westerly advection is highest in spring, leading to increased OC and EC concentrations.

Assessment of carbonaceous fractions in ambient aerosols at high altitude and lowland urban locations of Kumaon Province, Indian Himalaya

Amit Kumar et al.

Summary: The study found significant seasonal differences in carbonaceous species levels at Bhimtal and Pantnagar, with higher total carbonaceous aerosols at Pantnagar than Bhimtal. Secondary organic carbon formation and biomass burning were identified as the major sources for carbonaceous aerosols. The study also highlighted contrasting correlations of carbonaceous parameters with boundary layer height, temperature, and solar radiation at the two sites.

Source Impact Analysis Using Char-EC/Soot-EC Ratios in the Central Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) of India

Manisha Mishra et al.

Summary: This study measured carbonaceous aerosols in the atmospheric fine particulate matter above an urban location on the central IndoGangetic Plain for 1 year, finding significant differences in the characteristics and abundance of carbonaceous aerosols between seasons, driven by emission sources, seasonal meteorology, and atmospheric chemistry. The study identified biomass burning and fossil fuel combustion as the main sources of carbonaceous aerosols during winter and the post-monsoon season, and summer and the monsoon season, respectively, demonstrating the advantage of using the char-EC/soot-EC ratio as a tracer in the region.
