UAVs for Science in Antarctica

Pedro Pina et al.

Summary: A comprehensive review of the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in scientific activities in Antarctica is presented in this paper, based on the analysis of 190 scientific publications. The use of UAVs has revolutionized remote sensing technology in Antarctica, allowing for the acquisition of more detailed and cost-effective data, particularly in terrestrial, ice and snow, fauna, and atmosphere studies. However, the increasing use of UAVs may have impacts on the sensitive Antarctic ecosystems, highlighting the need for international coordination to plan and share UAV data in order to minimize environmental impacts.

The Impact of Glacial Suspension Color on the Relationship Between Its Properties and Marine Water Spectral Reflectance

Kornelia Anna Wojcik-Dlugoborska et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sources and properties of sediment in glacial catchments, and found four sediment sources that produced white and red sediments. The study also revealed that sediment color may be a key factor in the dependence of glacial suspension properties and spectral reflectance.

Extreme Temperatures in the Antarctic

John Turner et al.

Summary: This study presents the first Antarctic-wide analysis of extreme near-surface air temperatures, examining temperature distributions, extreme high and low temperatures, variability, and trends at 17 stations. Record high temperatures were mainly influenced by air masses passing over high terrain, while record low temperatures were associated with positive sea ice anomalies over certain seas.

Interrelation of quality parameters of surface waters in five tidewater glacier coves of King George Island, Antarctica

Maria Osinska et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impacts of glacial meltwater on marine environments near diverse glaciers of King George Island, Antarctica. Findings showed changes in water quality parameters due to glacier meltwater influence, including decreased salinity, temperature, and dissolved organic matter contents, as well as increased pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen values. Glacial meltwater was shown to have the most correlation with dissolved organic matter content and the least correlation with water temperature in the studied coves.

Global Estimation of Suspended Particulate Matter From Satellite Ocean Color Imagery

Jianwei Wei et al.

Summary: A new global SPM algorithm was developed in this study using satellite remote sensing data, showing promising accuracy in predicting SPM concentrations across a wide range. The algorithm performs better in turbid waters compared to clear waters, providing valuable information for environmental and climate applications. The study highlights the importance of satellite data in monitoring global water quality and the potential for future research and applications.
