Pretreatment of corn cobs using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and dimethyl sulfoxide to enhance enzymatic saccharification

Manita Kuntapa et al.

Summary: Ionic liquid (IL) pretreatment is a promising approach for pretreating biomass before converting it into sugars, but it is associated with high costs. The combination of [BMIM]BF4: DMSO pretreatment showed the highest delignification and resulted in a highly porous structure. Additionally, this pretreatment reduced the crystallinity of biomass and resulted in the highest cellulose conversion when followed by enzymatic hydrolysis.

Effects on delignification of reusing 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate and dimethyl sulfoxide in the pretreatment of corn cob for the enhancement of enzymatic hydrolysis in ethanol production

Manita Kuntapa et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method of high delignification by reusing [EMIM]OAc:DMSO with additional DMSO, showing promising results in cellulose conversion and ethanol yield. The research demonstrates a novel protocol and mechanism for efficient cellulose hydrolysis to ethanol, with up to 17 rounds of reuse possible under controlled conditions.

Development of non-derivatizing hydrate salt pre-treatment solvent for pre-treatment and fractionation of corn cob

Olayile Ejekwu et al.

Summary: The use of molten hydrate salt solvent systems for pre-treating and fractionating corn cob biomass showed promising results, with ZnCl2.4H2O/Urea solvent displaying the highest recovery rates for cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin compared to other solvent systems. This indicates the potential effectiveness of MHS solvents in overcoming biomass recalcitrance through pre-treatment processes.
