Production of volatile fatty acid from fruit waste by anaerobic digestion at high organic loading rates: Performance and microbial community characteristics

Ben-Yan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance and microbial community dynamics of an anaerobic VFA production reactor for treating fruit waste. The results showed that increasing the organic loading rate resulted in higher VFA concentrations and yields, with acetate and butyrate being the dominant products. The microbial community analysis revealed the presence of Lactobacillus, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_12, and Caproiciproducens genera, which were closely associated with anaerobic VFA production.

Membrane bioreactor-assisted volatile fatty acids production and in situ recovery from cow manure

Umarin Jomnonkhaow et al.

Summary: Cow manure has long been seen as a waste management challenge, but its organic content presents opportunities for producing value-added bioproducts like VFAs through anaerobic digestion. This study applied thermal pretreatment to inhibit methanogens and utilized an immersed membrane bioreactor for in situ recovery of VFAs, achieving stable long-term production and recovery.

Selecting fermentation products for food waste valorisation with HRT and OLR as the key operational parameters

Vicky De Groof et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of hydraulic retention time and organic loading rate on the fermentation pathways in a single-stage, semicontinuous stirred tank reactor. Different combinations of HRT and OLR resulted in distinct fermentation profiles and microbial communities. Adjusting these two key operating conditions can lead to a flexible product portfolio, improving the economic potential of acidogenic fermentation for food waste valorisation.
